I'm just going to be honest here...it's 2012. Pretty much everyone everywhere is aware of the whole 'end of the world' scenario, it's quite the joke and I'm sure many are taking it seriously.

I've always thought this would be PERFECT timing for the rapture and chaos to be unleashed, because everyone and everything is already so set for the great deception. There's a lot of talk about it 'not being the end, but the evolution of humanity'. How perfect would it be if we left and all hell broke loose, and people rang their hands and thought this really IS the beginning of the end, and suddenly the AntiChrist steps in and takes the reigns and spreads great peace. Couple this with the possible revealing of demons in the forms of aliens that point to the AntiChrist as an important figure the world should listen to and you have a GREAT deception indeed.

P.S. It would be easy for the aliens to point to the AntiChrist and say that he is the one, reincarnated in human flesh (much like Jesus in a way), who originally seeded humanity on planet Earth. With the theory of directed panspermia on the rise, it'd be perfect timing.
