(in a video about the people on 9/11 who jumped off the WTC instead of facing the conditions inside)
It is said (for those of you like me who believe in god), that? if you killed yourself you will not go to heaven. If people would just succumb to the smoke, instead of jumping out the window....

You know, given the choice between suffocating in the smoke, getting cooked by jet fuel, and going splat after the ride of a lifetime, I think I'd jump too. At least then you'd have the satisfaction of dying in a way where the pain would be over instantly.
On a related note, why do Christians feel the need to answer unanswerable ethical questions as if they know what God wants? This is exactly the sort of brainwank that led to the question about angels on the head of a pin.
*Newly-dead soul arrives from the mists at the gates of Heaven*
St. Peter: "Ah, hello there. Let me see... nope, you're not in the book of life, sorry."
Jumper: "What? But I was a committed Christian! I gave myself over fully to Jesus! Why would I not be in there?"
Peter: "Well, says here you jumped out a skyscraper to your death. Suicides go straight to hell, son. You know that."
Jumper: "But... but the building was on fire! The smoke was too thick to breathe, and the flames were coming close enough to singe my hair! Jumping out the window was my only chance of survival, however slim!"
Peter: "Blah, blah blah... get out of here, sinner."
I can't bear to keep emulating the twisted fundy mindset required to finish this diatribe, but you get the idea.
Which goes to show how arbitrary the magical rules of your death cult are, huh? They would have died anyway, yet expediting the process is somehow worthy of eternal punishment. Another thing that's always bothered me...where in the Bible is this rule against suicide offered up? I haven't seen it (though I guess I haven't bothered to look).
You brainless twit. You narcissistic waste of oxygen. You judgemental, selfish, spoilt brat. Have you ever felt real heat. I mean REAL heat. Those poor people had NO choice but to jump. And I can guarantee you one thing, had you been in their positions, you would have jumped too.
Well, look at it this way: They didn't kill themselves. It was perfectly safe outside at least compared to the inside of the building. So they were just retreating from the flames. The plummet didn't kill them either. And finally, it was the evil ground that killed em dead. Not themselves.
Pascal's god is a gullible god. So he should be falling for this explanation, also.
Hmmm...slowly choke to death, or die quickly?
I know which one I'd pick, and getting out of Heaven is just an added bonus.
Maybe they were hoping to survive, either way, jumping down to your death is probably a tad more painless then...oh, being crushed by a huge building, and choking, and being burned to death?
You are a horrible and twisted piece of shit.
What you say ISN'T EVEN IN YOUR OWN GODDAMN BIBLE.
Making up bullshit to scare people for the lose.
Umm, wouldn't voluntarily staying in a burning, collapsing building constitute suicide too? Looks like anyone faced with inevitable death and given sufficient time to think about it automatically goes to hell - decide to face it, or decide to kill yourself in a different way, either choice constitutes suicide!
They didn't kill themselves, they just jumped out of a window because the conditions were better and staying inside was certain death.
The fact that hitting the ground later did actually result in death makes no difference. They weren't intending suicide.
I want to say something useful, but at the same time, I don't want to disrespect all the people that died...
So I'll just mention that many of the people that died that day were from New York, *sarcasm* so what does it matter? They were all godless liberal atheists who were doomed to Hell, anyway.*sarcasm*
It isn't suicide if it means you live longer.
Conditions inside were certain death. Painfully. The fall down might have taken longer, adding moments to their lives. (and not nearly as painful time)
Xelphepolis,
you betray what an unsympathetic and nasty person you are. I suggest that you right here and now hold your finger in a candle flame for a slow count of ten.
Done that? Didn't think you would or could.
Now tell me again what you were saying about those poor, suffering people who jumped from those burning towers!
You are devoid of fellow feeling and all that people share in their common humanity. In a word, you are a monster.
And if your god is like that, then he is an evil monster too.
Those who fail to show sympathy and love towards their fellows in extremis are less than human.
"If people would just succumb to the smoke, instead of jumping out the window.... "
...they'd still be dead, and your god still wouldn't exist.
Considering there is a miniscule chance of surviving a fall (The wind resisatnce and Freefall effect) compared to certain death by smoke. They WEREN'T trying to commit sucide.
I remember reading about how cats fall out of 20+ story buildings and survived with only a broken leg.
Too bad they didn't have enough time to rig something together, like Cubicle Hang gliders.
The people trapped in the WTC towers on 9/11 were going to die NO MATTER WHAT THEY DID. The only choice they had was how they wanted to go.
Those that jumped died relatively quickly, with comparatively minimal suffering. Why the fuck do you feel qualified to judge them, you sanctimonious prick?
FUCK YOU.
The images of the people jumping from the towers on 9/11 were the single most haunting part of the whole thing, for me anyway. I can't help imagining having to make the choice been jumping to your death or being burned alive... how absolutely terrible it must have been for those people who wanted to live, and certainly weren't ready to die, to have to choose to commit what some might call suicide in order to escape the horror of burning to death. They didn't CHOOSE to die, they chose not to die in pain. Any God (or human being, for that matter) who would consider THAT a sin is a compete and utter psychopath, who deserves to burn in the hell that he created. A loving, compassionate God wouldn't expect people to die in pain just to prove that they were good enough for him.
Who the hell do you think you are to judge people who were in a situation that you couldn't even possibly comprehend? Go fuck yourself, you sanctimonious piece of shit.
My ex-best friend made a similarly snarky comment on the day it happeded and this mentality still makes me livid.
Just think of the type of person who probably worked in the WTC. Confident, assertive, educated, probably a bit self-involved, some were no doubt very agressive alphas. Those are not personality traits of people who would easily throw their lives away. Were you up on those floors? Do you know for certain the conditions behind that steel and glass facade? NO! Of course you don't, you weren't there. You're still alive seven years later make disgusting comments about the sacrifice of innocent lives. The ones who were near a window and chose to jump, chose to die on their terms not the terrorists' terms. Do the rest of us a favor, find a skyscraper, go to the top and jump. That's all you're good for.
Sorry about the rant everyone, but this really just pisses me off.
I don't think jumping out of a buring building constitutes killing oneself.
Oh, by the way, why don't you say that to someone who lost a loved one that way? Go on, go ahead. I'll just be sitting here on the sidelines with my popcorn...
"If people would just succumb to the smoke, instead of jumping out the window...."
Ah, ya just had to be there.
I want to unleash a burning, fiery death upon these bastards... I truly do.
AAAAAARRRRRRGGH!
*goes to bed before he gets any more pissed off*
But...the people jumping out had a small chance of surviving the fall, while their chances of surviving the building where much, much lower...so the people who DIDN'T jump committed suicide.
I don't think god was comparing the situation and saying:
"You died by smoke inhalation, however if you had've jumped out of the building there is a small chance that you would've survived. There was a 0.16% difference between the differing survival statistics, and that renders your death as suicide. Hell it is"
Somehow, I don't think the concept of suicide for sentencing would actually work since, even if your main idea is to die, you may be removing pain from the experience or something positive (such as giving up a kidney that would someone else, which if you had died in normal conditions you wouldn't have been able to provide.
I don't think it would actually be able to differentiate between death and suicide in most cases.
(I really hope that counted as logical)
So...die painfully via asphyxiation, or jump from a window, and either die painlessly and even, potentially survive? Your God would prefer I suffocate? Fuck him, and fuck you.
@ scubajesus: My sincerest condolences.
Yes, 'cause when you are in a state of severe shock and panic, the first thing you are contemplating is "which action is getting me into heaven?". Oh, wait, no it isn't.
Let's throw you into a burning building and see if you wouldn't try to get out of there, no matter what.
(Why is there a question mark in the middle of the sentence?)
stupid assholes
sums it up for me.
It's hard to believe that anybody caught in that situation would still believe in a loving and benevolent god.
In any case, it's easily argued that those poor people were effectively killed by the original attack and that they certainly didn't choose to die on that awful day.
God is said to be omniscient. He’s supposed to know me, and everything i know at every decision i’ve ever made.
Xelphepolis is not omniscient, so while they may IMAGINE that they could stand heat that’s great enough to melt your own flesh, just to avoid Hell, they can’t really judge the decisions made by the suicidal on that day. Or by quadriplegics that choose suicide. Or addicts. Or people facing debilitating conditions.
But if God can fully understand the choice of jet fuel or impact, and still punish them for their choice, god’s a fucking asshole.
Confused?
