If we all came from a "common ancestor", why would you choose to evolve into a monkey instead of going for the top of the food chain?

If it's a common ancestor, why would you choose to believe that choice is involved AT ALL? Why, for instance, would you choose to be descended from your great-grandfather in particular, when you could have been descended from, say, Andrew Carnegie?
Well, if we're going to call it a choice (which it's not), then it's because the top predator niche was filled, but the one we originally filled was not.

I'm not sure. Why did you choose to evolve into a drooling simpleton instead of the next Einstein?
"...instead of going for the top of the food chain..."
What do you mean with "the top of the food chain"? Would you have prefered to evolve into something more tiger-like, or lion-like? Oh, don't worry, I am a closeted furry myself ;)
...you don't "choose" to evolve. Nor do you really choose HOW you evolve
Well, technically, behavior with what you have can influence it, but only as much as that behavior brings survival success or failure. Which you don't really have 100% control over...so...
When they passed out looks,
I thought they said books, and I didn't want any.
When they passed out ears,
I thought they said beers, and I asked for two long ones.
When they passed out legs,
I thought they said kegs, and I asked for two fat ones.
When they passed out noses,
I thought they said roses, and I asked for a big red one.
When they passed out heads,
I thought they said beds, and I asked for a big soft one.
When they passed out brains,
I thought they said trains, and I missed mine.
*sigh* I was born an ape into the Ape family. I don't remember choosing it but here am I.
There is no "top" of the food chain; it's a continuous loop. If it weren't, the food would have run out long before humanity ever arose. What's above human beings, you might ask? Invariably the countless micro-organisms that consume us when we die, in some times and places various carrion feeders, and also, very occasionally, a lucky predator.
And can I get a "hear, hear" to Philbert's lament?
If blonde haired women are preferred why do some women choose to be dark haired? If tall men are preferred, why do some men choose to be born short?
Fuck, how stupid can these people be.
Gee, that is the most convincing argument I have every heard. Not exactly sure what his point was, or what the logic behind it is, but sounded pretty damn convincing.
Individuals don't evolve, species does.
Why did you choose to become the son of your father?
Some monkeys are at the top of the food chain, if by "monkey" you mean both monkeys and apes. The primates are mostly at the top, humans for example.
I read somewhere that lions prefer human meat. One man against a pack of lions does not indicate Man to be top of the food chain.
I thought this was incredibly stupid, but then I saw it was from Yahoo Answers. Evolution does not let anything "choose" what to evolve into. I find it fascinating that fundies can't grasp the fact that there's no higher intelligence controlling evolution, like they think there's a higher intelligence controlling everything here on Earth.
wow, this is a special kind of dumb.
First of all, evolution is not a ladder, it's a tree, humans are not "more evolved" then anything else, we've all been evolving from the universal common ancestor for the same amount of time, thus everything is equally evolved.
Second of all, evolution (like homosexuality) is not a choice, it's a biological process that takes place over many generations.
If we all came from a "common ancestor", why would you choose to evolve into a monkey instead of going for the top of the food chain?
That is quite possibly the stupidest thing I have ever hd the misfortune of reading.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
