just a quick note re these books. An article in this weeks Times Literary Supplement is from a Peter Thonemann, a lecuturer in Ancient history at Oxford University. He was asked by the purchaser of these books (David Elkington) to translate some Greek text in one of them. It turned out the text, repeated on several pages, said "...without grief, farewell! Abgar, also known as Eision...". Uhhh, what?

Some database searching revealed that this was a fragment of a dedication on a nondescript Roman tombstone from CE108 (with nothing whatsoever to do with Christanity) which was now on display in the Archeological Museum in Amamn.

His conclusion: The book was a forgery made in Jordan no more than 50 years ago, the forger copying some likely looking Greek text on an artefact from the right period in his local museum to make it look real.

The irony here is that they are violently opposed to the Catholic view that the authority for the current Biblical canon comes from generations of respected Christians, with access to the oral tradition passed down from people who were around at the time, choosing and retaining it. Under this reasoning, other books and versions of books were rejected by ecumenical councils and informed Christians over the years, and we actually have a fair amount of documentation of those decisions and what was rejected. So it is interesting to find early documents, but it doesn't change which books were chosen by the consensus of Christians over the years: the ecumenical councils had authority to do so, according to the Catholic view.

Rapture Ready believes that the Bible is the ultimate authority on everything, including itself, and that it sprang into shape pretty much exactly as it is very early on. They believe that the only changes from the form they currently hold were in other Churches, as corruptions. Which leaves the authority behind their personal current Biblical canon... that they believe this to be what is supposed to be there. Which leaves it pretty circular, but I suppose it's a coherent (if odd) reason to reject earlier versions or documents.
