An anti-abortion bill being offered by Republicans in Iowa would effectively ban all abortions and give parents rights over the bodies of unmarried adult daughters.
A state House panel on Wednesday voted to send SF 471 — the so-called “personhood” bill — to the full committee. The bill states that life begins at conception, giving fetuses the same rights as people.
Anticipating that the “personhood” provision of the bill will likely be struck down by courts, the GOP bill also provides criminal punishment for anyone who performs an abortion more than 20 weeks after conception. The bill makes exceptions if the life of the mother is at risk. However, it does not make exceptions for rape or incest.
Iowa House Democrats noted on Wednesday that HF 53, to which SF 471 is a successor, also gives parents the legal right to prevent unmarried adult daughters from having an abortion.
The bill states “injunctive relief to prevent a physician from performing abortions” may be obtained “by a parent or guardian of the woman if the woman is less than eighteen years of age or unmarried at the time the abortion was performed or attempted to be performed.”
The Iowa House Human Resources Committee was scheduled to debate Senate File 471 on Wednesday.

Question: What if the girl or unmarried woman is pregnant as a result of abuse by the parents or someone the parents know? Why should they have any say when they are the reason she's pregnant? Why should they have a say at all, to be honest, but this specific case is particularly unnerving.
Roe vs. Wade: 1973.
Repubican administrations had infinite chances to repeal that precedent-setting case.
So good luck with that. [/SCOTUS]
...oh, and I'm afraid that Donald Fart has too much on his pate... er, I mean plate right now, to help you. [/Comey & Rogers]
If a woman can be forced by someone else (either another person or a governmental entity) to carry a pregnancy to term, logically there is nothing to prevent those same agents from forcing a woman to have an abortion, is there?
Are you sure you want to give power over your body to someone else? No? Neither do I.
Another effort to get women barefoot and pregnant, the GOP would legislate literally chaining them to the kitchen if they could get away with it.
While i suspect this is just a feint or a vain effort in an attempt to appeal to voters, what does it say about murica that there are enough voters who this would appeal to? Lefties and liberal folks keep up the good fight, america could easily become the next pakistan or iran if these knuckle draggers get more power.
Easy way to take care of stupidity like this; point out that provisions like this come straight out of Muslim Sharia Law. Surely the GOP doesn't want to impose Sharia on the people in their state, right?
(Obviously, they want Christian Sharia Law, but it works on their idiot followers who really hate Muslims)
Most of this is just the usual stupid, but I'm awestruck by the level of fuckwittery which implies that in some respects, maternal grandparents have more rights in regards to children than the actual parents. In the extremely unlikely chance that this would set some sort of precedent, then we'd see laws making life a goddamn nightmare for any woman who escaped from the grasp of abusive parents and wants to have kids.
Iowa Republicans, this is super dumb and you should feel dumb for coming up with it.
@Skide
They know this likely won't pass, it is just red meat for their voters. That being said the republicans laid with the religious right some time ago (I think it was the 80s but as I was a child back then I don't know for sure.) Since then we have had shit like this in various states, usually red and in Bible Belt.
So this personhood bill GOP fuckers, does it offer help to the mothers? Help for the children once born? If not fuck your pro life agenda, it is all too clear it isn't pro life it's anti woman and forced birth. Your lot has defunded Planned Parenthood, didn't condemn Robert Dear after he shot up a Planned Parenthood and even kept the whole screeching BABY PARTS!!!! WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!! PWECIOUS BABIEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all the while not giving a fuck once born. How about having the father be financially responsible? At the very fucking least? No? Well fuck you hypocrite. So far you've proven George Carlin right. Until you're willing to help the mother and child, you can fuck right off a fucking cliff. The world will be better without your goddamn hypocrisy
@Skide
You might be right to be sure, but with Trump under indictment and investigation, I'm hoping he is out of office soon so my point about it being red meat for their voters stands and it is nothing more than that
In effect, that would make women minors in that respect until they are married, at which point I expect the husband would be allowed to object to the abortion.
In effect they are copying the status of women in islamic countries. Never has the name "American talibans" been that appropriate.
Girls are the property of their father until they get married. Then they're the property of their husband.
This gets more complicated with lesbians.

If Trump is impeached Pence becomes president.
Trump says these things just to con the fundies. Pence is a true believer.
Iowa House Democrats noted on Wednesday that HF 53, to which SF 471 is a successor, also gives parents the legal right to prevent unmarried adult daughters from having an abortion.
If the rest of it isn't blatantly unconstitutional, this part definitely is. FFS, fundies, get over this idea that you own your daughters even if they're grown women.
The US abortion laws will never be overturned!
GOP has no interest in them being so as it would remove a large part of their voting and donating base. GOP will always promise to get rid of it, but will never actually put any effort into it.
GOP knows that making abortions illegal would result in a lot fewer votes in the elections as the abortion one-issue voters would stay at home and GOP would lose drastically in every election.
GOP needs to keep up "the fight against abortion" in order to secure funding and votes - it will never be illegal.
Pence would be leagues worse I admit, but it seems this whole administration is just one big farce. With Russia hacking the election, it seems that would be unlikely it would be held that it should remain in power.
@2036703
It will remain in power because the people that got put in power want to remain in power.
It's not going to evaporate because of some philosophical incompatibility with American values. There are procedures that have to be followed. The people in power will make sure that the procedures somehow don't happen.
To impeach Trump a majority of the house has to vote for that. The house is majority Republic. They will not vote to remove their party from power, regardless of how much Russian cock Trump has sucked.
Even if they did we get Pence. And if we impeach Pence we get Ryan.
Why does any woman vote Republican under any circumstances?
@Spak: But, of course, overthrowing this shitstain nation is violence, and peace is the only option even if it will never work!
@Demon Duck of Doom
"Why does any woman vote Republican under any circumstances?"
Fundie women are just as clueless and gullible as fundie men.
"@Spak: But, of course, overthrowing this shitstain nation is violence, and peace is the only option even if it will never work! "
The people most likely to overthrow the US using violence are even fundier fundies.
Confused?
