Yesterday we visited with some friends, and one of them asked me if I had seen the Spiderman movies. I was a little shocked that he asked me this, since i know this person is a Christian. I told him "no" and that I would never allow movies like that in my home or around my family. My friend was puzzled about why I felt this way. I explained that we as Christians should never watch such stuff, because in it Spiderman is performing magic and all kind of miracles. This is blasphemous, because Jesus is the only one who can perform miracles and great feats.
My friend was shocked. He told me that "It's just a movie!" Everyone else we were visiting wiht that day agreed with him, too!
Why have so many Christians become desensitized to the evils of the world?

The "Spiderman" films have been amongst the highest grossing features ever. Yet, "Evan Almighy" was one of the biggest flops ever. Now what does this tell you?
Frankly, if the fictional tale of a youth changed by the bite of a genetically engineered (or radioactive) spider, who uses his changed self & the resulting abilities for the good of humanity poses such a threat to your fragile 'Faith', I daren't imagine what you think of Harry Potter, SFS. The sooner you realise your 'Jesus' is as fictional as Peter Parker, you'll realise why we react to what you say.
@Canadia
"a computer, gateway to every fucked up thing man has ever conceived."
SFS obviously hasn't heard of the Sewer of Hell that is 4chan's /b/.
Maybe they can keep the religion separate from daily life, and don't take everything in an old musty book as written in stone, more like average guidelines.
Nobody is saying that Spiderman really and truly can do magic, it's just a story, a fairy tale, make-believe.
Spiderman is evil, EVIL I tell ya!
Seriously, grow a brain and start learning difference between reality and fiction.
Apparently Jesus is not the only one who can perform miracles, Spiderman can as well. Either that or Spiderman is just fiction and you are one of the most stupid douchebags on the planet.
I vote for the latter.
The funniest part of this note is that he is shocked that everyone agreed with the other guy.
You see how stupid you sound when you rely on biased, second-hand information to formulate an opinion, SFS? No, of course you don't.
"I explained that we as Christians should never watch such stuff, because in it Spiderman is performing magic and all kind of miracles."
Obviously you're a highly informed critic of the comic book medium.
I hope Stan Lee finds you and smacks the stupid out of you.
"This is blasphemous, because Jesus is the only one who can perform miracles and great feats."
It's a bitch when the fictional character somebody else thought up starts encroaching on your fictional character's territory, isn't it?
"My friend was shocked. He told me that "It's just a movie!" Everyone else we were visiting wiht that day agreed with him, too!"
*feigns surprise*
No shit. You were expecting some other reaction?
"Why have so many Christians become desensitized to the evils of the world?"
Because unlike you some are actually reasonable, rational people outside of that one area of their life.

"Jesus just beat Spiderman at the movies. That's not the way it happened when I was playing with my action figures growing up. Spiderman always won. And do you know why?
That's right. Jesus has no webbing."
I explained that we as Christians should never watch such stuff, because in it Spiderman is performing magic and all kind of miracles.
Clearly she has never heard of Spidey except in name only.
Yeah sorry, Spiderman does no magic in any of the movies, and the only miracle would be the fact that being bit by a radioactive spider gave him superpowers, rather than cancer or death.
To be honest, when I was watching the Left Behind movie, it was a lot more fun to treat it the same way I treat Spider-Man and the X-Men.
Of course people with mutant genes can fire energy blasts out of their eyes, read minds, and teleport.
Of course being bitten by a radioactive spider gives you all of the spider's abilities.
Of course being Christian makes you immune to the hypnosis that the Head of the United Nations uses, and causes pop-singing angels to appear who can deflect bullets.
Okay, maybe as a Christian I can answer that, but for myself and not as an official answer from Christianity.
This is what I know about Spiderman, and if anyone out there reading this see an error, feel free to correct me. I don't want to be wrong.
Spiderman isn't performing magic or miracles like Jesus Christ did. In fact if you read up on Spiderman, you would know that the character of Spiderman is a boy named Pete Parker. Granted the teenager is an orphan, he is still a mortal being that is living with his aunt and uncle shortly before he was murdered. He got his powers as a teenager from being bitten from a radioactive spider(comic)/genetically altered spider(movie). Spiderman does have some clairvoyence "Spidey Sense" powers, but they aren't of use to him if he is fatigued or distracted. Spiderman also uses a utility belt for some of his "magic". In fact, I don't know of any miracle as you put it that Spiderman did that was similar to the miracles Jesus did. From what you are stating, you probably know absoulutely nothing about spiderman.
Furthermore your name, Soldier for Salvation, I even take offense to. I am glad people have answered your question with distain.
"Why have so many Christians become desensitized to the evils of the world?"
Oh please, don't even go there. People like you seem to make up crusades to fight so that you can "win" them just to feel better about yourself and call yourself good Christian instead of fighting real problems that anyone of any belief can relate to.
From what I seem to notice, the more religious oriented the name is, the more fundie you are.
I can see why you would think that; Jesus has in fact been explicitly documented as having shot webs out of his wrists. It was at the Pharisees, I believe. They were quite shell-shocked. A very little-known fact, but it's true!
This is blasphemous, because Jesus is the only one who can perform miracles and great feats.
Read your own book:
"And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments." (Exodus 7:10-11)
"This is blasphemous, because Jesus is the only one who can perform miracles and great feats."
No one but Jesus can perfornm great feats? How about the people who designed and built our major dams and bridges? How about those who landed men on the moon? How about those who discovered the polio vaccine?
Even your own Bible says that Paul performed miracles.
Also, you might look up the word "fiction." You seem a little unclear on that concept.
"I wouldlove to see what this guy says about Dr. Manhattan."
I would love to see what this guy says about Spiderman themed porn on the Internets. I was going to say Dr. Manhattan theme porn, but you don't have to go to the Internets for that :)
First of all, fictional tales and such about people performing miracles predates Jesus. Second of all, it's fiction. Unlike your religion, nobody is trying to pass it off as real and if anyone thinks it is, they are either very young, have some sort of mental problem, or they're just plain stupid. If having an imagination is blasphemous, why did your god give it to you? Third of all, the films are science fiction, not fantasy. Although there is magic in the comics, (primarily in certain villains Spider-man has to face) the movies are basically all about genetically modified abilities and technological upgrades. Some of it could be possible in the future, (like the idea of creating Humans with improved abilities through genetically engineering) while much of it requires suspension of disbelief (like the way Spider-man gets his genetic enhancements).
Except that in none of the Spiderman movies does Spidey ever perform either magic or miracles.
I've seen all three.
No magic,
No miracles.
Superhero comics are science fiction, not fantasy. They're not hard science fiction by any means, but they're rooted in the same things as all sci-fi: our hopes or fears about the future. "There not only is intelligent life out there, it's better than us and can help us" is a classic sci-fi premise and also the origin of Superman. "Science will make people turn all weird and stuff" is another classic sci-fi premise, and the origin of Spider-Man and his fellow bitten-by-a-radioactive-whatsit superheroes.
Of course, I can't imagine fundies being any more into sci-fi than into true fantasy, because sci-fi is rooted in MORE logic and rationality and real-world science. But at least if they understood the distinction they'd STFU about magic being in things that don't really contain magic.
"Why have so many Christians become desensitized to the evils of the world?"
I think perhaps it is you have become unable to discern what is evil, not them.
P.S. BWAAHAHHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAAHHAH!
Spiderman? Really?!
I would love to know exactly what Soldier For Salvation, watches on Television...
I suspect that his only viewing, apart from possibly the weather report, are the evangelical channels, that IMHO, are more fantasy, than any of the 3 Sam Raimi Spiderman movies...
I believe that Iron Man, would really blow his mind...
It sez in the bible, I think it's in ACTS, that the apostles were complaining about other, non Jesus followers, doing miracles.
So fail.
I've never seen the Spiderman movies, but performing magic? I thought the story was that he was bitten by a radioactive spider which gave him spider-like properties, such as the ability to cling to the sides of buildings and have exceptional strength. I guess you could call that "magic," but if you're familiar at all with any superheros, they all have some abilities like that. But here's the kicker: it's all fiction, and people who are into superhero lore know that it's fiction. I'm betting that many of them are Christians, too.
I guess Superman is satanic, too, because he can perform magic with his super strength and ability to fly. And yet he stands for truth, justice, and the American way.
Boy, you are a bundle of fun, aren't you? You know, you can have faith and still not be so fucking miserable for every moment of your life.
True fundie. It seems of all Christian denomonations only the Baptist and Evangelical groups call for the elimination of all fiction and most historical writtings. Sure, others will bitch a bit about Harry Potter or The Life Of Brian, and belittle comics and tv as bad influence but only fundies will call for the destruction of all other fiction products.
Can't stand the competition.
Makes me wish they'd green light Marvels Warlock series, an analogy of God's creation and Jesus' life, then we'd see some real fundie freak outs.
The original spiderman got enhnced strength and balance after being bitten by a raioactive spider.
He built a set of web shooters himself.
Nothing miraculous about it.
ps Its a work of FICTION.
You others seem to have everything covered, so I just have to add:
It’s Spider-Man , note the hyphen. [/comicnerd]
This:

isn’t Spidey throwing up the Devil’s Horns“ gesture you guys are so afraid of, it’s him triggering his web-shooters. Maybe SFS confused him with Doctor Strange, who uses a similar gesture to actually do magic:

The two have teamed-up quite a few times.
Most Christians are normal people who participate in society. He was probably just making conversation.
So, you should never watch stuff like the Bible either, then, because in it God is performing magic, and all kind of miracles.
It IS just a movie; what else should it be?
Why have so many fundies become overly sensitive to perceived evils of this world, while not bothering with stuff like child poverty, lack of clean water for millions of people, children dying of preventable diseases due to anti-vaxxers, pollution, fracking, coal mining and other real evils of the world?
@Swede :

Because it’s easier to wail about fictitious “evils” instead of actually doing something about real ones, while still feeling righteous.
My friend - a long-time Christian - likes the "Harry Potter" books; has all of them in his unimaginably huge book collection. Has all the "HP" films on DVD too.
NEXT!
The young man Peter Parker was altered at the genetic level by the bite of that DNA-engineered spider (a radioactive one, in the comics). Thus his strength & agility was increased manyfold. His hands & feet developed microscopic barbs, so as to grip on any surface. Via sensitivity to air currents, variations in pressure/temperature, and the Electromagnetic Spectrum, he developed a 'sense' that warned him of approaching danger. Nope, not seeing any 'Magic' in the creation of His Excelsior!ness Stan Lee & The Stupendous Steve Ditko.
As Solderp for Salivation proves here: With great ignorance comes great Derp .
Y'know, "Spider-Man" - comics to films - is seen as a metaphor for puberty & growing into early adulthood. How do I shot web?! [/Hugh Phanisms] X3
@Blue the Thief
Use of LOL-ing Milfeulle Sakuraba. Your argument is valid . [/"Galaxy Angel"]
Confused?
