I write this from the hospital,” John Stossel of Fox wrote. “Seems I have lung cancer.”
This was quite the revelation — one all the more powerful for its delivery in terse, Hemingway-esque prose. But Stossel, who said he “will barely notice that a fifth of my lung is gone” and that he will “be fine,” wasn’t here for a meditation on mortality a la Oliver Sacks. Instead, from the highly regarded New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the 69-year-old consumer affairs reporter quickly transitioned into a discussion of why his “hospital’s customer service stinks.”
“My doctors tell me my growth was caught early and I’ll be fine,” he wrote. “Soon I will barely notice that a fifth of my lung is gone. I believe them. After all, I’m at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. U.S. News & World Report ranked it No. 1 in New York. I get excellent medical care here.
“But as a consumer reporter, I have to say, the hospital’s customer service stinks. Doctors keep me waiting for hours, and no one bothers to call or email to say, ‘I’m running late.’ Few doctors give out their email address. Patients can’t communicate using modern technology.
“I get X-rays, EKG tests, echocardiograms, blood tests. Are all needed? I doubt it. But no one discusses that with me or mentions the cost. Why would they? The patient rarely pays directly. Government or insurance companies pay.”
“Customer service is sclerotic because hospitals are largely socialist bureaucracies,” Stossel added. “Instead of answering to consumers, which forces businesses to be nimble, hospitals report to government, lawyers and insurance companies.”

That's funny, the health system I work for used an electronic medical record that allows patients to see results, make appointments and contact medical staff from any computer or phone. We're even interfaced with a statewide system that can pull results from participating hospitals during any encounter with the patient. All this while getting the lion's share of our revenue from Medicare and Medicaid. So-called socialism isn't slowing us down in the least.
I'm so sorry to hear that those busy doctors are wasting their time on new or worse-off patients rather than logging into their facebooks to check your latest status, liking all your tweets or checking in every five minutes to make you tea. What assholes.
"The patient rarely pays directly."
Oh, fuck you. Fuck. You.
The guy is told that he has a disease that not so long ago would be a death sentence, but thanks to his doctors he will survive it without much problems, and he moans about the time he has to wait?
Few doctors give out their email address.
And it is because of entitled spoiled children like you that they don’t. Otherwise they would be bombarded with e-mails and wouldn’t have time to actually care for the patients who need them.

If you know better than your doctors what is medically needed, why bother going to the hospital at all?
So, they basically do their job, which is making tests to see what you have instead of giving up irrelevant personal information? Man, socialist is not what you think it is
"First World Problems"
[Verse 1:]
My maid is cleaning my bathroom, so I can't take a shower
When I do, the water starts getting cold after an hour
I couldn't order off the breakfast menu, cause I slept in till two
Then I filled up on bread, didn't leave any room for tiramisu
Oh no, there's a pixel out in the corner of my laptop screen
I don't have any bills in my wallet small enough for the vending machine
Some idiot just called me up on the phone, what!? Don't they know how to text? OMG!
I got
[Chorus:]
First world, first world problems
(First world problems)
First world, first world problems
(First world problems)
First world, first world problems
[Verse 2:]
I bought too many groceries for my refrigerator
Forgot my gardener's name, I'll have to ask him later
Tried to fast forward commercials, can't - I'm watching live T.V
I'm pretty sure the cookies in this airport lounge ain't gluten free
My barista didn't even bother to make a design in the foam on the top of my vanilla latte
[Chorus]
[Verse 3:]
Can't remember which car I drove to the mall
My Sonicare won't recharge, now I gotta brush my teeth like a neanderathal
The thread count on these cotton sheets has got me itching
My house is so big, I can't get WiFi in the kitchen
Uh, I had to buy something I didn't even need just
so I could qualify for free shipping on Amazon
[Chorus x2]
[Outro]
Actually Stossel went into the doctor with a pimple on his butt, the pimple said "hey doc, can you get this asshole off me?"
For those that don't know him, he's nearly a nobody, he's a paid right wing liar. I have my doubts he's had any such procedure. No proof, it's just the 'boy that cried wolf' syndrome.
Just the very idea of a paid shill who has marching orders on what to write and has no research or investigative aspects to his opinion articles to suggest Doctors should spend most their time on the computer,,, boggles the senses,,, no sense of proportion or his lame ass place in the universe. Worse, he makes more money then that doctor too,, what a fucked up country.
X-rays, EKG tests, echocardiograms, blood tests, are all standard stuff any time you have a even a minor surgery. The ECG is to see if your heart will crap out under anesthetic or the stress of surgery. The blood tests are to see if you have any underlying problems, such as an infection that could spread through your system. You're having major surgery, dumbass.
I fully expect he'll post a lengthy whine about his aftercare, when the mean nurses will demand that he get up and move. Glen Beck's rant about his mean nurses who weren't impressed with his garden variety bad trip due to a bad reaction to anesthesia was one of the most pathetic things I've ever heard.
Comparing Stossel's writing to Hemingway or Sacks is an insult to literate people.
"“But as a consumer reporter, I have to say, the hospital’s customer service stinks. Doctors keep me waiting for hours, and no one bothers to call or email to say, I’m running late.’"- Are you sure you've ever been to a hospital before now?
Go to a “holistic” or “new-age” medical facility, their service will amaze you. The product they deliver is utter crap and you will be going the way of Bob Marley, but you will love the customer service.
Well, there's always Obamacare .
Suck it up, princess! Oh, wait...! >:D
Yes, you do in fact need multiple tests to confirm a diagnosis. Any diagnosis, let alone cancer.
EKGs and echocardiograms (ECGs) are the same thing. ECGs don't diagnose lung cancer, but my guess is that you're an average american and thus have some kind of heart problem, too. An ECG is a visual representation of what your heart is doing typically over a 3-6s period.
Lastly, you are not a "consumer" at a hospital. You're a patient. The distinction is important, for basically the exact reason you describe as frustrating. The only way to bump yourself up the priority ladder is to be closer to death. There's no manager you can try to harangue into giving you "better" treatment. You get the level of care that you need. If you legitimately don't receive at least that, then yeah, be upset.
Confused?
