In my own life:
*brainwashing: The bible says "train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it". I was raised in church. I was damn near always in church. I was forced to go to church, even when sick. I was never presented with any ideas contrary to those held by my church. I was taught to cry, and mourn for things I didn't understand. Brainwashing is most effective when you get them while they're young, and isolate the information they receive.
*censorship: I was raised not allowed to read science books that were not from a christian publisher. I wasn't allowed to watch Fern Gulley because of the environmentalist message. I was not allowed to listen to the people I witnessed to, and was trained to ignore their arguments. Censorship in my life has always had a right-wing/christian bias.
*deceit: When I was 19, I had sex with a lesbian. I was always warned of the dangers of sex before marriage, and lesbianism. None of it came true. I'm not homeless, I kicked my own drug habit without the help of christianity, I've now slept with many people, male and female (I'm bisexual), and I have no STDs and no children out of wedlock (I was taught about protection very quickly by my very patient non-christian friends), I found healing and inspiration through psychology, and I'm happily married, living on my own, and going to school. This is not the miserable hollow existence I was promised. The people who told me I had to be a christian were deceitful. The atheists in my life were actually the ones who were not afraid of telling me the truth, and listening to them paid off.
*democide: Wow. Never heard of that happening to christians in this country. It's happened in other countries I'm sure, but no more than it's happened to non-christians. Hell, Have you seen Uganda lately? They had a bill recently (that the president has vowed to veto) that would kill all gay people, and imprison those who know of a gay person who don't report it. This persecution-complex of yours has to stop. Your the majority in this country. I have to deal with that AND you whining about everyone hating you??? You've made my life hard by convincing my parents I'm going to hell, killing babies by advocating abortion, and probably a child molester because I'm bi. When you do things like that, people don't like you. Get over it.
*diplomacy: If trying to get along with people is against christianity, christianity is not a worthwhile concept, and should be abandoned. I'd rather be at peace here, then go to a heaven that might not exist when I die, after a life of horrific war and anger.
*environmentalism: The bible says that god gives us things so that we can use it to his glory. I clean my house so that I can be happier, can't you accept that we shouldn't DESTROY our home? Environmentalism in the extreme, I can see that. Humans are more important than plants and animals, but we need plants and animals to live, and live well. Why is that such an evil idea to you people?
*fear mongering: I've been attacked by christians for my sexuality. I've had bibles thrown at me. I've had people fall on their knees crying and telling me I'm going to hell. Ever hear of Heaven's Gates and Hell's flames? I had nightmares for weeks, and I already was a christian! Here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8146987921730454511&ei=FlBCS9HVKaXuqwKM8sm_CA&q=Heaven%27s+gates+and+hells+flames&hl=en&client=firefox-a# You don't call THAT fear-mongering????
*harassment: What exactly do you think people do when they proselytize? I've had big groups of people armed with tracts, bugging me at bars and IHOP. Fuck you. I don't want you to pray for me, and I don't want you to tell me the way. I want fucking pancakes.
*homosexual agenda: Quote from my mom, "EVERYONE has an agenda". Our agenda, as GLBT-Americans, is to obtain the life that straight people get to take for granted. My first girlfriend and I might still be together, if our engagement didn't seem to go on forever because we couldn't walk into an office with our social security cards and birth certificates, pay 25 bucks, and be married, and if we didn't have to hide from our friends because she was military. That's all we wanted. We weren't going to be married in a christian place of worship, we were going to be married by a pagan friend of ours. It was political, and had nothing to do with your religion. We just wanted to live in peace, i.e. you leave us alone, we leave you alone.
Isn't that the agenda of most people?
*ideology: Everyone has ideology. "a set of aims and ideas that directs one's goals, expectations, and actions". If we didn't, we might be murderous, suicidal gluttons. Oh wait, you already think that. YOU have ideology. Most atheist's ideologies are serving them just as well or better than yours.
*indoctrination: Which is pretty much brainwashing. I still own a copy of "Music to die for", in which you tried to scare me and my hard-earned money away from bands that aren't hurting me now, and funneled my fear-induced buying into bands you liked. I bought a RAVE cd in high school. Know what that means? I funded a goddamned CHILD MOLESTER. Thanks assholes. Don't think your little world is so damned perfect.
*intimidation: I seem to remember being locked in a small room while some big scary guy with a bible threw water at me and cast demons out of me because I had pink hair. I have had this happen quite a few times.
*liberal logic: OH NO LOGIC! Logic is how we all learn when someone is duping us. I wish I had learned logic as a kid. Maybe I wouldn't have lied awake at night crying for people who are actually living pretty damned good lives.
*logical fallacy: Do we REALLY want to go there? The whole concept of believing because you are afraid not to is FULL of ridiculous fallacies. Especially when that deity is making you MISERABLE.
*mass media: See "Music to die for".
*obscenity FUCK SHIT ASS MOTHERFUCKER GODDAMN SON OF A BITCH. Nope, still not an atheist. Still pagan. And refraining from it didn't keep me a christian.
*political correctness: Sometimes it's a little overly ridiculous, but what's wrong with not calling black people n******, because it hurts them?
*professor values: I had a christian philosophy professor. He's been the only thing helping me not believe your whole religion is a piece of shit that ruins lives. Obviously, something in your religion helps him be the kickass awesome guy he is. If you want more christian professors in public universities, you need to know that they can no more preach during class than my buddhist astronomy teacher, or wiccan world religion instructor, or gay physical education teacher. It's not just about you, it's an attempt to allow anyone to get an education, and not force them out of it because someone wants to blow their proselytizing load.
*public education: Yeah, I was homeschooled. I turned out less christian than most of my public schooled friends. In fact, hiding me from the world made me even more curious about it! See also: Brainwashing
*Darwinian science: So the answer is to lie about what it teaches to make your christian answers sound more believable? That's what my science textbook did. I got out and looked at what they really teach, and it was NOTHING like what you people described to me. Your feeling the need to lie to me about it pushed me away more than anything.
*"sound" reasoning: How is it that everything I learned as a christian turned out to be false? At least they try to use sound reasoning. You guys mostly used fear, brainwashing, and deceit to keep me a good little christian.
*terrorism: You mean like bombing abortion clinics? I've never heard of militant atheists terrorizing a group of people to stop them from doing something they don't like. How about the guy who beat up the gay guy with Levitical law tattooed to his neck? Really now.
*violence: See terrorism.
Sorry for the extremely long post. All I wanted to show was how these people use the exact same tactics they complain about.
