For the first time in a long time, there is no more earthly beacon of hope (i.e. America). It seems like for most of human history every country was a pretty terrible place to live. European countries improved faster than other places but they never did have a government like ours, a government like no other in history. It's terrifying to think that we're reverting back to a time when there was no true earthly freedom anywhere. The freedoms we enjoy today are mere echos from the past and soon they will fade away forever.

Oh, for gods' sake, the United States hasn't cornered the market on freedom and democracy, you cretin. In fact, your country is far from being even in the top-ten most free countries in the world. I daresay what you are looking for is a Christian theocracy.
I'll bet you're sorry you supported the PATRIOT Act now, aren't you?
Which president was it who originally inflicted that thing on us anyway?
What freedoms have you lost?
The freedom to enslave people?
The freedom to beat up and rape your wives?
The freedom to desert your kids if you got too many?
The freedom to give birth to a child every 14 month or so?
I'd rather have the freedoms to
decide for myself if and when to have kids,
decide what happens to my body,
ownership by kids over parents rather than ownership by parents over kids.
Many in Europe think that the US government is from a time when there was no true eartly freedom anywhere. The US seems to be a pretty terrible place to live, where you can have three full-time jobs and still not make ends meet, where people are stupid enough to truly believe in Creationism, where (it is rumored) people can't even point out their own country of a "blank" map of the world.
You do know that your government is an amalgam of many different governments throughout history, right?
"European countries improved faster than other places but they never did have a government like ours, a government like no other in history."
I live in the UK - in Europe.
National Health Service: 1948.
Legalisation of homosexuality: 1967.
Legalisation of abortion: 1967.
Welcome to the 20th Century, Ruptured Retards.
"there is no more earthly beacon of hope"
Welcome to the UK, Ruptured Retards. Enjoy your stay. We have a state religion, the Protestant Church of England. Enjoy your paradox.
@Doubting Thomas:
Well, most European countries have universal healthcare, gun control, abortion, socialist politicians and more and more even have SSM or at least civil unions. And the American Christian right has preached for years now that the USA would descent in some kind of post-apocalyptic hell-hole if these things would happen there. So it is only “logical” that Europe must already be such an hell-hole, reality notwithstanding
It's amazing, all the comments over there... One person even praises the family in the story for sailing off into the ocean with their young children because they "had faith." There's no, "gosh, maybe that was a dangerous thing to do." I wonder how they'd have responded if the family had drowned. Maybe then they wouldn't be so quick to dream about flouncing from the US for being too "liberal"...
These morons view America as having been a Leave it to Beaver paradise that never existed. And today the country has fallen behind because of these douches who want to deny other people basic human rights. Seriously, remember segregation, women's suffrage, and that at one time you could own another person and send your children off to work in a factory? Good 'ol Murikan freedom...
All you other commenters, don't make the mistake of assuming raptureready is a representative sample of Americans. They are a fringe group.
Most of us are well aware that they are the ones trying to limit individual freedom by forcing their beliefs on others.

We know that, man, we know that. Don't worry. If RR people represented the majority of the US, there's no way good recent-ish policies would have been implemented.
Man, I'm sorry for you. Your alternate universe sounds bad :c
Wanna move to ours? Our Europe is actually pretty cool. I think you'd like the Germany I live in. Have you ever been to Hamburg?
And Cologne is not far from where I live, so how about we visit the Cologne Cathedral? I'm not religious, so I don't care much for the supposed relics, but the building is still pretty impressive on its own.
Speaking about religion, no one here gives a damn that I'm Atheist, so that's great, too.
And don't be afraid to step out of the closet, no one will hurt you <3
Did you know our current chancellor is a woman? The whole equality thing works out really well, so don't you worry if you're female.
...I do wish Christianity would have less power over our laws and politics, but hey, one small step at a time, mh?
The freedoms we enjoy today are mere echos from the past and soon they will fade away forever.
Yes, absolutely. As long as you were a wealthy, white, protestant man you had the freedom to do pretty much anything -- up to and including murder -- to members of the out-groups without any fear of repercussions. Of course if you were a woman, african american, native american, catholic, poor, etc you probably tended to be a little less enthusiastic about all of those 'freedoms'.
The freedoms we enjoy today are mere echos from the past and soon they will fade away forever.
Because we all know that the freedom not to be enslaved because of the colour of your skin is something you should never have if you want to be TRULY free...
If America ever was a beacon of hope, and if it is a great place to live, it is precisely because those who don't believe as ThePenguin does are free from the religious tyranny that people like ThePenguin want so desparately to impose upon them.
Personally, I'd give my right arm to have been born in Western Europe. I'd have health care, a decent retirement, reasonable vacation time and the funds to travel when I get it, and education without spending the rest of my life paying off $100,000 or more in debt. I wouldn't have to worry about losing my home if I get sick. I wouldn't have to work three low-wage jobs just to keep a roof over my head and STILL have no health care.
I wouldn't have to see my elderly mother cry because she can't afford food if she buys her medicine, or because she's terrified because she knows that if it takes her more than 100 days to recuperate from a major surgery in a nursing home, the state will take her home in order to pay for her to have a couple more months there to rehabilitate, or force her into bankruptcy, so she'll lose it anyway. She knows this would leave her homeless, because her pitiful Social Security doesn't pay enough to cover rent and utilities in an apartment, anywhere.
I wouldn't have to worry that the state would force me to be incubator, or that my gay friends couldn't have the same rights as me.
What DO I get? I get to own a machine gun and all the ammo my shithole apartment can hold. I'll take that European "lack of freedom", any day.
From one American to another Penguin-how dare you tarnish one of nature's coolest & most adorable animals by using the name-GTFO. America was a "beacon of hope"-a century ago. Now that we've degenerated into the mess that we are-mostly beacuse of you & your kind, we've become nothing more than fat, trigger happy joke. We can only hope that you & your ilk will continue to shrink into nothingness, or die of heart attacks brought on by too much Chick Fil A.
For the first time in a long time, there is no more earthly beacon of hope (i.e. America).
We've actually been doing better lately, despite you and your ilk trying to turn our country into a theocracy.
A few recent things...
1. Section 3. of DOMA ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
2. Same sex marriage now legal in 13 states
3. DADT was repealed.
It's terrifying to think that we're reverting back to a time when there was no true earthly freedom anywhere.
Translation: WAAAAAHHH! People we don't like are getting the same rights as us!
Yes I know, that means you are being terribly persecuted somehow.
By all means...

Yeah, you WASPs won't be special anymore. Cry some more, it amuses me.

I found one comment on that same RR thread that I can't submit here since it isn't really "darndest", but I think it's hilarious either way:
"As Christians it is our job to stay here and witness. Jesus would never flee.
As bad as we may think we have it here, it is absolutely nothing compared to Roman-occupied Jerusalem where 200,000 Jews were crucified.
It is time for Christians to drop this persecution complex and start leading people to the Lord. I witnessed to five people at lunch today. "
Drop the persecution complex? This person won't last long at Rapture Ready.

Well, at least you acknowledge that.
"It is time for Christians to drop this persecution complex"
Yes, yes, this sounds like a good idea. Please go on.
"and start leading people to the Lord. I witnessed to five people at lunch today."
Annnnnd you ruined it :c
Damn it, I had some /hope/ for you for a second ;_;
Magna Carta bitch.
Oh yeah, it took a long time to be implimented but the idea of free people certainly predate your country
The American Constitution.
Oh yeah, that's what people mean when they say America has the best democracy, ON PAPER. It again has taken years to be implimented and you lot want to tear the religious freedoms out of it to this minute.
"It's terrifying to think that we're reverting back to a time when there was no true earthly freedom anywhere." Says the Theocratic advocate.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
