As I braved the sub-zero temperatures on my way from the parking lot to the Pro-Marriage Rally at the Indiana statehouse in Indianapolis, I walked at noticeably brisk pace. It was only about a block and half journey, but the weather was so cold that day that I soon began looking for a place of refuge along the way. In that short distance, I was unfortunately not able find such a location, but I couldn’t help but notice what was playing at the Indiana Repertory Theater on Washington Street. On the marquee, the words “And Then They Came For Me” immediately jumped out and captured my attention. The stark irony of those words was not lost on me. Another chill went down my spine, and this time it wasn’t because of the frigid tempuratures.
This play, one of James Still’s most popular, is a multi-media production of video and live performances that are carefully woven together to tell the harrowing, true life events of Eva Schloss and Ed Silverberg, a step-sister and friend of Ann Frank, respectively. Schloss and Silverberg were two Jews that were tragically entangled in the evil advance of Hitler’s Nazi Germany. The dramatic production recounts their survival of the nightmarish events surrounding the Holocaust and vividly depicts their years spent in hiding and the horrors of the concentration camp.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out where things are rapidly heading in our country. Before the accusations of paranoia or overly melodramatic exaggerations are cast my way, let me remind you to never underestimate the subversive schemes of a true radical Leftist with an amoral axe to grind. With their notorious enemies’ lists, they have a very unscrupulous way of marginalizing or eliminating their opposition. Never forget Todd Starnes recent report about the U.S. Army’s utilization of the SPLC’s hate group list to identify evangelical Christians as potential terror threats—or the IRS’ recent and insidious targeting of conservative groups—or President Obama’s brazen propensity to flout or write new laws—or the Democrat’s ridiculous contortions to rationalize or even to encourage the President’s indefensible conduct.

Fair enough, American Centrists (you have very little Left, BTW) are Nazis and/or Leninists. Exactly whom have they put behind bars, in concetration camps, sent to Alaska, disappeared etc.? You seem unable to provide any names of martyrs for your cause, and that kind of disproves you. And no, "dr" Hovind doesn't count.
I'm so tired of you idiots comparing your so-called "persecution" to the Holocaust. It's an insult to the victims and the survivors, and you're not being allowed to bully others into getting your way anymore isn't even in the same solar system to what they suffered. Grow the fuck up.
Eva Schloss was only 15 when her ordeal at Auschwitz began, and if she can survive that as a teenager, surely you can survive, well, whatever the fuck you think you're being persecuted for this week.
Man, I'm the one who's pro-marriage. You're anti-gay marriage.
Oh, and by the dubz the Nazis killed gays too.
@gimel
There is Bernie Sanders. And the candidates he supports for prez in 2016 are Elizabeth Warren and Hillary Clinton.
We do have a left wing, just not a unified one.
And to think, if you had been able to find one, just one single convincing and legally valid reason to support your opposition to marriage equality, you could have saved the country from this awful albeit nebulous fate of yours (as well as saving yourself from having to make a brief trudge in the snow). However, neither you nor the other folks at the rally (all, what, four of them?) have been able to do so. That's why you keep losing in the polls and in the courts.
Not to worry though. The country will adapt to marriage equality. Indeed, if the precedent with regards to civil rights is any indication, it will only be a few decades until conservatives will be claiming that it was they who led the fight for marriage equality from the beginning. When even the conservatives abandon you, you will know that you have been officially consigned to the dustbin of history.
Makes your little walk in the snow seem rather insignificant, doesn't it?
Yet Jeff is still at home typing a bunch of drivel on his computer about how Obama is like Hitler and his way of life will soon be legislated out of existence.
Isn't not being in a country with a tyrannical government good Jeff?
"And They Came For Me" is what actually happened to quite a number of gays in WWII. The very people you persecute. The irony makes me feel nauseous.
U.S. Army’s utilization of the SPLC’s hate group list to identify evangelical Christians as potential terror threats
Well, more than a couple on that list have used or threatened to use terror. So, far from being unreasonable, congrats to the Army for saving our tax dollars by using the SPLC's list instead of making their own.
Todd Starnes recent report [...] IRS’ recent and insidious targeting [...] President Obama's brazen propensity to flout or write new laws [...] the Democrat’s
If Obama is writing the new laws, why then would he flout them? If this passes for English, as you say, it doesn't take a genius to figure out where things are rapidly heading in our country.
I knew where you were going with this, but it's actually the fascists on the conservative side who would like to emulate the Nazis. After all, you yourself were going to a rally to refuse rights to people not like you.
"As I braved the sub-zero temperatures"
A man has to be able to take sub-zero degrees, seriously there was an entire week during my lifetime when we had between -25°C and -15°C and I walked from and to and from school for 45 minutes each day. And that was just me, at the time my father was on snow patrol and had to clean the driveways for 2 hours each morning - and while he cursed like a pirate, he did it anyways.
"they have a very unscrupulous way of marginalizing or eliminating their opposition"
Yes, these horrible tactics called "open dialogue", "listening" and "education".
@Goomy: "We do have a left wing, just not a unified one."
Only a few countries do. America's left wing is also really damn small (Bernie Sanders, a socialist in Seattle and sprincled over New England and the Pacific a member of the Greens in municipal parliaments - compare that to any European country), though it once was big. I blame the Cold War and America's search for an identity.
"...I walked at noticeably brisk pace."
How do you walk at a brisk pace without it being noticeable? Unless the pace is so brisk as to render you invisible, but then you'd probably notice the hurricane force winds.
Or:-
Pretentious, moi?
@UHM
The left in the US was already dying by the time the Cold War happened. The careers of its best leaders ended in the 1920s when immigration from Europe was drying up and the left was unable to form any concerted response to the Great Depression. That role was taken by FDR's labor/farmer/Dixiecrat coalition and the left was further damaged in the late 1930s by the First Red Scare, overseen by the HUAC chaired by the Democratic Senator Martin Dies. The Cold War just finished it off as an effective force. One should also take into account that the Frontier Spirit is not conducive to left-wing organization, nor the extraordinary geographical mobility and, then, social mobility of Americans.
One of the signs of an amateur writer is the overuse of adverbs. "insidious targeting" "brazen propensity" "ridiculous contortions" Only teenagers can be excused for writing like this. And what the hell is "overly melodramatic"? Were you reeling, writhing, and fainting in coils?
The syndrome was noted among the Christians of anccient Rome. They literally wanted to be picked up and thrown to the lions. The magistrates pleaded with them, trying to find ways they would accept to save themselves, but they wouldn't be swayed. So...they had martyrdom complex.
So does Jeff Barbie wire and a lot of other fundies that we find here. So why not grant their wish and have a big martyrdomfest. Put them in the arena to fight wild rabbits, or dormice.
Funny, I was just out for a brisk walk in -20 degree bizzard when I came across a translation of the Nuremberg Laws. It starts:
The Laws for the Protection of German Blood and German Honour
Moved by the understanding that the purity of German blood is essential to the further existence of the German people, and inspired by the uncompromising determination to safeguard the future of the German nation, the Reichstag has unanimously resolved upon the following law, which is promulgated herewith:
Section 1
Marriages between Jews and citizens of German or kindred blood are forbidden. Marriages concluded in defiance of this law are void, even if, for the purpose of evading this law, they were concluded abroad.
Isn't that odd? The preamble sounds a lot like the wording of various DOMA laws. And that last bit about voiding marriages sounds a lot like what various states are threatening in regards to out-of-state same-sex marriages.
So the Nazis were being Nazis by prohibiting marriages. Whereas you state the Democrats are Nazis for allowing marriages.
Analogies are hard, mkay?
As I braved the sub-zero temperatures
My hero. The accounts of your plight during your endless one and half block journey through the wilderness of inner-city Indianapolis reminded me of a Jack London novel. How many live-saving Starbucks did you pass en route?
Poor you, having to "brave" sub-zero temperature for a walk of a block and a half. I've been riding my bike to work (it takes twenty minutes) for most of the winter, in snow and sub-zero temperatures.
Pro-marriage? So, you're in favor of people in love, regardless of orientation, getting married? No? You, like the Nazis, think that gay people have no human rights? You do know that somewhere between 5 and 15 thousand homosexuals were sent to concentration camps, right?
Eva Schloss didn't become a step-sister to Anne Frank until many years after Anne had died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen.
Yes, things are indeed rapidly heading towards restrictions of human rights, if the Religious Right is allowed to continue. Hitler was a true radical Rightist, stupid. If you don't want to be seen as a hate group, then maybe you should stop spreading hatred about innocent people. Oh, and if you want to be of tax-exempt status, you ought to keep to religion, and out of politics.
@ Sasha (#1641132):

Uh, those are adjectives. They're modifying nouns. Adverbs modify verbs.
There's one little problem with that analogy, and that is that the Nazis were not "left".
And wasn't it the right-wingers Nixon and Hoover who had enemies' lists?
Confused?
