Actually, trying to understand the world is EXACTLY how religions are born. Without any science to rely on, cultures will accept any excuse for the water falling out of the sky.

Here you're wrong. Scientists don't just "make things up". The scientific method is based on testable, repeatable observations and peer review.

Right, so belief in God has brought us nothing, because those who believe do nothing. Science brings us all kinds of gifts that your God claims to do. If science is the god of atheists then my god kicks your god's ass.
