in places where sexuality isn't taboo, and condoms are actually easily available (they handed them out on Valentine's Day in our schoolyard, for example) and stigma-free, and where the kids get something better than "Abstinence only" BS about licked cupcakes, STD rates are actually quite low; certainly lower than in fundieland.
Despite years of promoting safe sex and sex education, there are to this day people who spread lies and misinformation about safe sex and who attempt to block proper sex education all together.
Nevermind that a lot of people are still too much of a moron to properly protect themselves.
You're essentially bashing a tool by saying that it doesn't work while it's the people who use them that are to blame.
All these years of pushing religion, and we still have poverty and social injustice. If religion really worked, there would be no more poverty.
I doubt if anyone thinks that prophylactics are absolutely guaranteed to protect. They can break, for instance. They do offer a very high level of protection. It is because of the lack of their use, especially among the young, that the rate of infection is as high as it is. So the rate has nothing to do with the USE of condoms, or with condoms themselves. If you don't put them on your dick, they certainly won't work.
...If people actually were responsible and USED THEM as much as you state, maybe. If parents didn't push against proper condom use info in schools... Maybe! But that's not the facts. Plus there are douches like catholics who say that condoms are evil and therefore AIDS is going happy in Africa.
Condoms work. When used properly. WHEN USED AT ALL.
So, because they're not 100% effective we should abandon them? Well, let's list some safety mechanisms that aren't 100% effective:
Wow! What a great world it would be if we got rid of all of these 'ineffective' safety mechanisms! Meanwhile, in Realityland, we realize that safety equipment doesn't have to be 100% effective. Hell, in some cases it doesn't even have to be 50% effective. All that matters is that it's better than using nothing at all.
1. They aren't 100% effective against STD's, but they're a HELL of a lot more effective than not using one.
2. Places that encourage their use have a lower STD rate as a result.
3. When they're used properly (something sex ed teachers) they help to prevent the spread of STD's and greatly reduce the chance of pregnancy. When you're using them properly they're also much less likely to break.

Only if everyone used the every time it's appropriate--which they don't--and only if they had a 0% failure rate--which nothing does.
Yes, because a condom is a magical talisman that wards off all disease. I mean it's not like these diseases can be spread through other means (I say to the thundering gasp of fundies everywhere,) and that condom manufaturers don't readily admit that they aren't foolproof (They are only 99.9% effective, when used correctly.) No, because condoms haven't MAGICALLY made all disease go PUFFGONE, they are obviously useless, and should be discarded, nevermind that areas where teens are taught how to use them effectively and have them readily available have DRAMATICALLY lower STD and teen pregnancy rates.

No depth needed -- just look around. All these years of pushing seat belts and we still have people dying in automobile accidents. If they really worked there would be no more auto deaths.
Oh, and for condoms (or seat belts) to work, people have to actually use them. Properly. Every time.

They aren't 100% effective sure (they break, slip, people don't put it on right, etc), but they are sure a lot more effective than telling kids just to hold off on sex till they are married and never telling them that there is protection.
Wow, they're not 100% effective!?!? Well, then I guess Abstinence-Only is the One True Path, then. I mean, obviously, if someone gets hurt in a crash while they're wearing a seatbelt, then the only thing to do is revoke all licenses and teach that driving is sinful.

Condoms only work if you use them, correctly and throughout the whole intercourse.
But, there are stupid morons in this world saying that condoms are bad, sinful, evil. Those stupid morons make fewer people use condoms, which increases the amount of STDs and HIV cases. Which in turn increases the risk of contracting STDs and HIV.
Kids need to learn how to use condoms BEFORE puberty, and they need to be comfortable and confident in using them.
If people would use them, there would be no problem.

No. And the rate of HIV transmission among gay/bi men decreased dramatically as a result of teaching and practicing safer sex. The rates of other STI transmission has also greatly decreased In addition, regular early testing means that Syphilis and Gonorrhea no longer have to be majorly life threatening. Soooo.....yeah.

1. No condom, broken condom, slipped condom.

No explanation needed - just look around the trailer parks. All these years of pushing Christian 'morality' and we still have babies born as a result of incest, rape of young girls and other mens' wives. If their 'morality' really worked, there would be no more sexual assaults and child abuse.
