The thing that scares me about society today is that we like to give up all the progress we've made. We want to give up religion, we want to give up nationalism, we want to give up capitalism... the irony is that so-called 'progressives' are the ones that want to give up this progress. Go figure.

I think I see what's confusing you, Sambo. See, when we talk about progress, we mean progress away from the mistakes of the past. Say it with me now: awaaaaaaay.
"The thing that scares me about society today is that we like to give up all the progress we've made."
"We want to give up religion,"
You are talking about progress... Religion, by definition, opposes progress. It's dogmatic, counter-productive and has always been strictly against all things that would broaden peoples knowledge.
"we want to give up nationalism,"
How does thinking your country is superior to other countries help anyone by any degree at all? Now if everyone would just forget the artificial boundaries of countries and see everyone as citizens of planet Earth, we could probably be a lot happier and considerate of others.
"we want to give up capitalism"
"fuck you, got mine" isn't exactly the best way to further our technology, culture or overall health. But then again I'm an European and therefore right there up with China, Cuba and the U.S.S.R in my political views.
Edit: Meh, fucked up my signature... [read:A furore normannorum libera nos domine.]
"We want to give up religion, we want to give up nationalism, we want to give up capitalism..."
Sounds like what Gene Roddenberry envisioned, when he created "Star Trek": A utopian world united under one government - the United Federation of Planets (based in San Francisco), with no separate countries, nationalities, currencies - or religion. After all:
'We must question the story logic of having an all-knowing all-powerful God, who creates faulty Humans, and then blames them for his own mistakes.'
-Gene Roddenberry
"the irony is that so-called 'progressives' are the ones that want to give up this progress. Go figure."
Gene's world sounds like the ultimate in progress (with, as shown in ST: TNG, DS9, VOY & ENT, Starfleet in the 29th Century having timeships, to enforce the Temporal Prime Directive, advancing further; boldly going where - and when - no-one has gone before. Now, Sambo83, care to explain what Christianity has done to advance the progress of humanity?:
