You know, I worked on some of the most advanced weapons in the arsenal when I was enlisted and we still had working parties to move mail and food in lines of hand-to-hand passing.
The military likes simple because simple is less likely to fail and you can replace a 19 year old a lot easier than a satellite.
So why would anyone develop a directed energy weapon to do what could be accomplished by sending four staffers, or six corporals out to do?

Right, like you couldn't start a wildfire by sending a couple of guys out with a few gallons of diesel and a lighter. Nope, has to be directed energy weapons, because that sounds so much more scary.

I've found that with conspiracy theories, the inverse of Occam's Razor is true with these guys. The more convoluted and elaborate a plot is, the more likely they are to believe it.
