Life has been evolving for a few billion years. Most vertebrates practice homosexual partnerships. That this is so widely spread in the biosphere, and has been retained in so many species, would tend to indicate that it has a purpose, whether or not we can identify it… Yet.
I like the idea of a population control. Some species will respond to gross imbalances of gender by individuals changing their gender.
It’s possible that homosexuality is grown out of that, or a separate solution to a problem. Having adults that contribute to the group survival but not to the population size may be a benefit.
