Were women meant to serve men?
Women have no other purpose on Earth Women have been made by the good hand of God to serve men. To bear children and keep the human race going. Women are not physically nor emotionally nor mentally fit to support a house hold all by themselves. They need men to manage the money. Women's sole purpose is to clean and be quiet.

*gasp*
"Men have no other purpose on earth, but to support women and sire children whenever SHE decides, and take the mice out of the traps and haul the trash down to the curb without complaining." There, that's just as accurate as your statement.
Women are not physically nor emotionally nor mentally fit to support a house hold all by themselves.
Yet, for all of recorded history, millions have done just that.
even in this guys dream world were men are greater than women, in a world of 100 people he would only be considered at about 51, at the bottom of the rest of the men.
If men are as naturally great as you think they are, and your one of them, you should be able to make it just fine in a gender equality based world. the fact that this guy needs people below him to function tells you alot about his character i think.
also are women suppost to serve atheist/buddist/heretic men? because that would go against your gods interest. or are women only suppost to be slaves for you personally?
Do people really think this is the better deal for men? I mean, sure, you force women to tend to your every whim, but that means you are responsible for doing everything else ever. So while you're out preventing civilization from crumbling, your "helpmeet" is sitting at home, reading, probably getting smarter than you. Real good strategy there.

The short answer is that it's complicated. Yes, the people in charge over here are still stuck in some very backwards thinking and there's a low turnover rate for those politicians.
The good news is that often, just because it's an "ideal", doesn't mean it gets put into practice. I've worked with pregnant women and single mothers before and they stayed employed. Often, the employers are younger and more liberal than their conservative higher ups and they often say things like "We need more people paying into the pension service anyway," in case someone does say something.
Another factor is that these politicians are quite old and are retiring faster than they can be replaced.
Japan is far from perfect, but it's not a conservative's utopia either. Things are changing, just not as rapidly as the west.
@Grey Rook & Liz_7: My point was only aimed at the idea that women can't manage money by themselves. The tradition in Japanese households is that ALL the money, including that brought in by the husband, is under the woman's purview. And as you noted, this is a highly patriarchal society we're talking about. So if a place as male-slanted as Japan is so willing to entrust women with money, where does that leave Unknown's claim?
Confused?
