A bill filed by a Tennessee Republican aims to make children born through artificial insemination illegitimate.
WMC reported that state House Representative Terry Lynn Weaver is sponsoring HB 1406 to repeal Tennessee current statute, TCA 68-3-306, which declares that children born through artificial insemination are the “legitimate” child of the mother’s husband.
The text of the new bill says it immediately “repeals statute that deems a child born to a married woman as a result of artificial insemination, with consent of the married woman’s husband, to be the legitimate child of the husband and wife.”
Last year, Weaver was one of 53 GOP lawmakers who got involved in a same-sex marriage divorce that dealt with the custody of a child born through artificial insemination. Weaver and the other lawmakers asserted that the lesbian wife of the child’s mother should not be considered a “legitimate” parent under the current statute.

While obviously targeted at lesbian couples, I think the Republicans are ignoring how many heterosexual couples can't have children through intercourse.
@Psalmanazaar : The issue is more one of parental rights. If one parent isn't considered legitimate, I know for a fact they aren't an emergency contact with schools. They can become so, but it requires extra paperwork. It may have other legal implications, I'm just speaking from my experience working at a school.
Here in South Carolina, for "illegitimate"/born out of wedlock kids, if there's a break-up, the mother* automatically has full custody and the father* has no parental rights at all unless and until he goes to family court to get recognized and have his rights established, even if he's listed on the birth certificate as the father. This contrasts with married couples, where the father automatically has the same rights as the mother.
*(I use the terms mother and father because I don't know how same-sex parenting is handled here)
@DarkPhoenix
They most likely don't care who else they're hurting. These idiots would probably nuke America to the ground if they thought it would show "teh ebil ghays" how much they hate them.
So long as they themselves aren't in the blast radius, of course.

WITH THE CONSENT OF THE MARRIED WOMAN'S HUSBAND
That ought to take care of the matter just fine when a heterosexual couple has a child through artificial insemination. And whatever you decide to legislate about a same-sex couple would just be "I don't like the way you live so I think I'll punish your children". That's a snippy, spiteful way to behave, and it is especially unbecoming in someone who is sworn to serve the public in any capacity.
How is this their business? This violates the right to privacy of every party involved, and that's only one of the problems with this idiocy.
What - should every kid born in wedlock be DNA-tested to ensure the right name appears on their birth certificates?
If a couple chooses to have a child using artificial insemination, that is none of the government's business - no matter who the couple, and no matter what the reason. Hopefully the courts will squash this lunacy should that legislator's god, the Morning Star (and well-named Father of Lies) who fucks with his head, be able to reach enough people to pass this fuckery through.
(Looks like WWIII is about to start, and these idiots fiddle with panty-sniffing while the world is set to burn.)
The assholes who spend their time on crap like this are being paid a lot of money to waste time. I personally believe legislators who try to interfere where they don't belong by introducing bills they know to be ridiculous on their faces should be stripped of office for wasting taxpayer money and the judiciary's time.
So, Republicans do not give a crap about families, they just care about bloodlines.
And they are supposed to be the moral ones? They still consider humans as breeding stock, obsessed with determining the lines. They do not care about all the incidents that happen in families (adoptions, adultery...), they just want their categories to be headed. Legitimate, illegitimate. Good, bad. Holy, sinful. What was said about those who deal only in absolutes?
They are not pro-family, they are pro-pedigree. They still perpetuate the social darwinistic worldview of the Victorians, with the poor being, of course, bad stock, whereas rich people are necessarily paragons of virtue. Never mind the fact that the most they have worked in their lives is when they climbed out of their mother's body and even then, their mother pushed.
And atheists are supposed to be the nihilistic ones? Hel, we are the ones trying to find reasons to be decent to each other, no matter social status, skin colour or belief. You want to see the real nihilists? Try the good "moral" christians who thoroughly despise the poor and glorify themselves of their accomplishments and good conscience because they dropped a penny before a hobo one day.
Have Republicans totally lost their collective minds? I mean, I always joke about them wanting to take us back to the 1950's (if not 1850's), but fuck, this guy is totally regressive.
@2019512
"Why is marriage so important to things like emergency contacts? wtf "
If you're not married you can't be an emergency contact. This happened a lot in the 90s, where critically injured children were left without medical care in a hospital because the "real" parent wasn't available and the other SSM parent wasn't married(ie was legally a random person off the street).
Confused?
