“I would do exactly what I pleased all the time [if God didn't exist]. If I needed money, I would steal it from my shareholders or my bank.”
Quick way to lose shareholders, really.
There are no gods, but i still don’t steal from coworkers.
"If I needed a woman, I would lie, cheat and steal to get one.”
I have a woman. If she doesn’t want sex, i don’t have sex. if she’s not near, say on a business trip, i don’t have sex. couldn’t care less about gods, but i care about her and the promise i made to her.
"And since I am fairly smart, I would probably get away with it.”
Depends on how you define ‘get away with.’ I mean, at the very least it’ll impact my self-image.
"And, if I get caught, I would lie and blame others, like the media, my parents or my ex-girlfriend.”
And how often does this work? You’re fairly smart, you say? How effective is this defense?
"I would every moment of my life be concerned with myself and my own personal needs and desires.”
Then you’re a sociopath.
or you would be. Frankly, i think you’re strawmanning atheists as completely immoral beings. But then, why aren’t the prisons filled with atheists?
“I mean why shouldn't I?”
We’re evolved as social beings. Society only works if we choose not to harm others, by and large. It’s why we obey traffic laws, to get along with the other drivers. Not too complicated, and needs no supernatural revenge-maker to explain it.
