Atheists, the Pope believes in God, so why don't you?
I'm PRETTY sure the Pope has more education then most people on here, which doesn't mean he's better than us though. ^_^ But anyway, if the Pope is well educated and still believes, doesn't that tell you something?

Don't believe in popes either. Only christianity and Sunni Islam has a hieracy.
I am a PhD in several subjects ranging from Engineering to Ancient History, fluent in 9 languages (I'm writing in my 5th at the moment) and my job of over 56 years is translating ancient texts.
51 years as a dedicated christian, now well into my 22nd year as an atheist, and in my 73 year lifetime been on my deathbed twice.
Get this straight - the Bible as presented now - can only be summed up as a collection of distorted babylonian fairy tales thrown together by a bunch of semi-literate goat-sodomisers, to brainwash the gullible. And boy, do YOU fit in that category.
Could I apply the same reasoning to you, changing Dalai Lama for Pope and buddhism as the religion you should believe in?. Conversely, Carl Sagan was an atheist and, even though I admire his work very much and It sticks out a mile he's a more than average intelligent man, I don't share his beliefs.
Christians, Darwin believed in evolution, so why don't you?
I'm PRETTY sure Darwin had more education than most of you.
If Darwin was well educated and still believed, doesn't that tell you something?
Because the Pope doesn't have any good evidence?
"I'm PRETTY sure the Pope has more education then most people on here"
Maybe, but he still takes it on faith, and I don't have the faith to believe in God.
Yes - belief in God tends to happen when you graduate from theological seminary schools.
Not always, though. Some people come away from seminary with profound disbelief. Usually, though, such people were strongly fundamentalist when they went in, and education at seminary broke their belief system. It's usually the people that do NOT take the Bible absolutely literally to begin with that stick with seminary.
And I can't believe no one has yet mentioned that the Pope, believer and all, also agrees with the Theory of Evolution.
That right there makes this the massive failure overload of the month.
Lots of studying does not equal good studying. Surely you've heard of the buffoon who studied the bible for 25 years and is still not aware of the contradictions in it? Oh, you're that buffoon, sorry. Fucking sheet man.
Yeah, some fail to learn, (Pope, you, theist, rightwing repubs,...)
Lion, why aren't you an atheist? Dawkins is far more educated than you are...
Appeal through Education? Doesn't work.
"...if the Pope is well educated and still believes, doesn't that tell you something?"
Yes. It tells me that even well-educated people can be wrong. Hell, "world experts" on subjects with far more intellectual foundation are frequently wrong on the subjects they are world experts in. In other words it stands as another demonstration that the argument from authority is unsound.
@ Michael
Sir, you are my hero.
Oh yeah, and the Pope is the greatest mind of...
the fourteenth century. *rimshot*
In addition to membership in the Hitler Youth, he was also the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. That's what they renamed the Office of the Inquisition.
Not exactly the best example one could come up with in order to convince me.
The pope isn't in the chain of command, never has been.
Why all these middlemen? Why not just abandon the obvious bullshit?
If you want to love god or Jesus or something, make that your own dirty little secret.
@ Michael , this perpetual sophomore has arrived at the same conclusion.
Call me wacky but doesn't the Pope kind have have a vested interested in maintaining the whole existence of God thing? For the clergy to admit to the truth is akin to turkeys voting for Christmas.
Keep schtum and keep the palace.
"I'm PRETTY sure the Pope has more education then most people on here,"
He worships a hippie in a bathrobe and a diaper, how much education does that require?
@ Michael
Dad, is that you?
Atheists, the Pope believes in God, so why don't you?
So, fucking what. Who cares? I couldn't give a shitless about the Pope, and what he believes.
Logic fails within the first sentence.
What you're saying is that we should all follow the perspectives of people more educated than ourselves.
Following that logic, everybody should follow the most educated person in the world.
The Pope is not the most educated person in the world.
So we should not necessarily believe what the Pope believes.
Just to completely dump on whatever was left of your argument, the Pope is against the use of contraception, which would go some way to improving the AIDS situation in Africa. Since the Pope considers condoms more of a problem than AIDS, we can see that his judgement is flawed, and so it is not a good idea to follow his lead.
Appeal to authority has just failed harder than ever before.
Steven Hawking is an atheist. Steven Hawking is a hell of a lot smarter than you or the Pope. Doesn't tell you something?
See, I can make logical fallacies too.
Ok, following that logic, why don't we be atheist like Carl Sagan?. You know, beliefs have nothing to do with education.
More education does not necessarily mean more intelligence. My brother is one of the most intelligent people I know. For many years he worked in construction. His years in university after that have just taught him to express his thoughts more eloquent, but they are basically the same thoughts. I trust my brother infinitely more than I trust the Pope.
Really. The only people who believe any pope is or has been really intelligent are Christians. A lifetime spend studying the Bible is a lifetime studying crap.
Catholics believe that a popes understandinding of spiritual matters is infallible. They're wrong too. There is no magic sky man handing out exceptional wisdom and most the Bible contains no wisdom.
Using a holy leader against Atheists makes as much sense as using the Bible, we don't believe in it or the claims of it's followers
"Atheists, the Pope believes in God, so why don't you?"
Pope Benedict XVI = Christian.
Cardinal Ratzinger = Nazi.
Hitler = Christian.
Hitler = Nazi.
You do the maths, Lion of Judah. Nazis have no right to exist, never mind telling me what to do.
PS- And that 'all boys had to join the Hitlerjugend' excuse = bollocks. There's no excuse for being a Nazi:

QED.
if the Pope is well educated and still believes, doesn't that tell you something?
Yes; that the ammount of education an individual recieves...
a) ...does not have a direct corelation with his/her intellectual capacity. I have seen complete and utter prats with multiple "real" Master's degrees.
b) ...has no immediate bearing upon his/her personal character and morality. Meaning that just because the pope has a bunch of degrees (most of them honorary anyway), it doesn't mean that he's above being the lying, deceiving, depraved sack of shit that he is.
But anyway, if the Pope is well educated and still believes, doesn't that tell you something?
Other people who are/were also VERY well educated:
Richard Dawkins
Linus Torvalds
Steven Hawking
Carl Sagan
Jean-Paul Sartre
Thomas Edison
Sigmund Freud
And countless more.
All of them equally, or better educated than the pope. And all of them atheists/agnostics.
I'm pretty sure that Mr Hitchens and Mr Dawkins have quite a bit of education between them as well, and they don't believe in gods. So why do you? What's that; you don't trust them? Well, there is the answer to your question too.
How much of the Pope's education have been conducted within the church and how much is secular?
Btw, the Pope believes in Evolution, so why don't the RR crowd?
"if the Pope is well educated and still believes, doesn't that tell you something?"
It tells me educated people can still be stupid. Just look at Andy Schlafly, doesn't that tell you something?
“Atheists, the Pope believes in God, so why don't you?”
Arguments from authority suck swamp water EVEN IF i accepted the Pope as an authority on something.
“I'm PRETTY sure the Pope has more education then most people on here,”
Education in determining God’s existence? Or did his education start with that as an accepted axiom?
Either way, i don’t care if he’s convinced, i haven’t seen any evidence to compel me to believe.
"which doesn't mean he's better than us though.”
Just infallible.
“But anyway, if the Pope is well educated and still believes, doesn't that tell you something?”
Yes. It’s not a matter of education. I could seriously not give a fuck how many letters follow his name, i need to see some evidence for myself.
Christians, the Dalai Lama believes in Reincarnation, so why don't you?
I'm PRETTY sure the Dalai Lama has more education then most people on here, which doesn't mean he's better than us though. ^_^ But anyway, if the Dalai Lama is well educated and still believes, doesn't that tell you something?
Confused?
