The irony being that dissenters in the Soviet Union were known to have been classified as mentally ill, which just goes to show that paranoid authoritarianism has striking similarities no matter what political ideology is nominally adhered to.
PS: Don't mistake this as an endorsement of that Horseshoe "Theory" bullshit; centrists are perfectly capable of being paranoid authoritarians along with the rest of the political spectrum.
@NoXion:
To the best of my knowledge, horseshoe theory merely states that the two furthest political extremes are nearly indistinguishable from each other in their positions on a given subject. That the tiny break in the would-be loop is the only thing separating them. Not that they're specifically both authoritarian or that only the extreme ends can be extremists .
A good example would be something I've seen in discussions of the inclusion of women in the draft. The most extreme rightists argue against including women because they're delicate flowers incapable of keeping up with even the least of the boys either physically or emotionally, while the most extreme leftists argue against including women because requiring women to serve in such a toxic, masculine environment would be hostile and anti-woman. They end up saying the same thing with different words--that women can't serve as well as men simply because they're women.
Also, one point of agreement, in this case the drafting of women, is insufficient cause to say that you'll have trouble fitting a cigarette paper between them.
Confused?
