“This vote on whether we stop the gay-marriage juggernaut in California is Armageddon,” born-again Watergate felon and Prison Fellowship Ministries founder Chuck Colson told the New York Times. Tony Perkins, the president of the Christian right’s most powerful Beltway lobbying outfit, Family Research Council, echoed Colson’s language. “It’s more important than the presidential election,” Perkins said of Prop 8. “We will not survive [as a nation] if we lose the institution of marriage.”

Them scary gays is tryin' ta carry off our marriages! They're going to grab all the bouquets and cakes they can find and run for Canada! We gots ta stop 'em!
Okay, Tony Perkins makes me think of Norman Bates speaking this quote in his creepy voice at the end of "Psycho".
I don't care to listen to what a felon from the '70s has to say about anything.
“We will not survive [as a nation] if we lose the institution of marriage.”
Bullshit. If it were that important then living in sin and divorce would be banned. They are going strong, and so it the birthrate.
"Well lets see.. didn't the Roman Empire only fall after the Emperor changed the official religion to Christianity?"
Yes, but Christianity had very little (if anything) to do with the Fall. Let's not fall into fundy thinking here, we're better than that. Sprawl without the bureaucratic infrastructure to support it and smaller enemy "barbarian" nations are the more likely causes of the Fall of the Empire.
The institution of marriage has never been what you claim it is. Marriage was originally a political and financial institution of the aristocracy, and now it is still little more than a financial institution. Allowing for gay marriage would only change that a little, as part of allowing it is for visiitation and tax rights, but it would at least change the insitution a little for being for love.
Why righties take the words of Watergate felons like Colson and G. Gordon Liddy as gospel, I don't know.
And as others pointed out, the "institution of marriage" is more a financial arrangement than a romantic or procreative one. The fundies crow about "traditional biblical marriage" without realizing that it meant one man and many women.
What the hell does marriage and traditional family have to do with anything? Other countries in which marriage and childbearing are declining have less social problems, less crime, are more peaceful, take care of their citizens, are better gloable citizens, and have MUCH LOWER instances of CHILD poverty. Oh, and more secular countries tend to be much more humane and peaceful, you f-ing moron! Now, please tell me, how will we not survive as a nation? EVIDENCE, please, or else STFU!
We will not survive [as a nation] if we lose the institution of marriage.
Well I guess it's a good thing that you are not trying to ban that institution... oh wait, you are.
Yes, because allowing two people who love each other to marry is more horrible than killing innocent civilians, drowning thousands of Americans in debt, and melting the ice caps. Get a grip.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
