The only person I have seen the Left comfortable condemning is Hitler, and at that, not for his tyranny, secret police, or his totalitarian (and totally incompetent) economic policies, but merely for his racism: and they only disapprove of Hitler so that they can call Republicans Hitlers. When real racism rears its ugly head, as when paynim terror-bombers call Jews the sons of apes and pigs, the Left will utter soothing words of moral equivocation, change the subject, and counter attack.

Wright might like to reflect on the elements of the right who, during the 1920s and 1930s, thought that Mussolini and Hitler were nothing short of admirable, and after the war sang the praises of Franco, Allende, Videla, Stroessner, Marcos and Verwoerd. Pretending that "the Left" is one monolithic bloc is about as idiotic as pretending that Robert Dole is a latter-day Mussolini. While it's true that there are parts of the left that keep very quiet about the human rights abuses of various dictators - and then there are folks like George Galloway who seem never to have met a dictator he didn't like - this ignores the vast majority of the democratic left. Remember, the first politician to condemn the construction of the Berlin Wall was a social democrat, Willy Brandt.

Even the KKK have disassociated themselves from Fred Phelps & his WBC. And the latter are as anti-Semitic as the Klan.

Hitler was a right-winger. You are a right-winger. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a Republican, but - unlike Hitler (who, like Arnie, was Austrian) - is pro-Choice.

Allende: I'm sorry, senior moment. I meant the murderer Pinochet. Allende's defenders tend to be left-wing, not right-wing. Allende's government was democratically elected, although it had a marked tendency to ignore democratic principles like the rule of law. Furthermore, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that Allende's regime compromised Chile's sovereignty in favor of the KGB as much as Pinochet's did with the CIA.

Marcos: Marcos as in President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines not Subcomandante Marcos of Mexico, who has never ruled his country. Ferdinand Marcos's defenders were right-wing, the Subcomandante's left-wing.

I agree, nonetheless, that neither Allende nor Pinochet, nor either of the Marcoses, are in the same league of butchery as Franco or Videla.

Hitler and his secret police were undeniably amongst the worst racists and tyrants that one can imagine in one's worst nightmares, but you cannot deny that almost overnight they turned the German ecomomy around. From rampant inflation and a virtual state of collapse, the Nazis guided Germany to an almost miraculous economic revival (and a military one, too, for that matter).

Of course, the way they achieved all this is why we "disapprove" (the understatement of the century) of them. But while they were vicious, unfair, racist and thoroughly evil, their methods were hardly "totally incompetent." They came at a dreadful cost, and no one in their right mind would defend them, but those economic policies were thoroughly successful.

For a while, anyway. It is Hitler's military ambitions which led to his and Nazi Germany's (well earned) downfall.

Hitler's economic revival was built on very shaky ground as it was dependent on what was, effectively, junk scrip. This was one of the reasons behind Hitler's frustration with Chamberlain and Daladier - and the reaction of his own people - in that he missed an opportunity to go to war, something he pursued with vigor through 1939. Had peace prevailed beyond 1940, it is likely that he would have lost that opportunity altogether as the British and French rearmed and the German economy would have taken a turn for the worse.

If you take the long view, of course, Hitler brought utter ruin to Germany both militarily and economically. It is one thing to look at Germany's dazzling successes from the vantage point of the railway carriage in Compiègne in June 1940; it is quite another when seen from the remains of the Führerbunker in May 1945.
