I have heard it said and truly believe there is no such thing as an athiest. Put them in a foxhole or in the direct line of fire from Evil Muslims and watch how quickly they become UNATHIESTS. This is for attention only and they do receive the attention otherwise such nonsense would never be put on a screen. Everybody look at the Athiests arn't they just too cute?

This quote was attributed to an Army chaplain during WW2, I think. It caught on because it's cute and falls within the realm of silly sayings. Similar to "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition."
Even with context, they are meaningless but they sound profound as if containing hidden truths. But,it's just playing with words.
Try this one that I just spun up : A day without Sandy is like night.
See what I mean.
I'm an atheist and I did a tour of duty in Iraq. I don't ever recall "converting" when the rockets were bearing down on me.
But then again, I doubt this moron would listen to anything said by atheist soldiers.
I believe in the System Administrator.
What does this prove, anyway? That your religion is always tempting us? Jerks.
My mother (not a religious woman) recently underwent major surgery when there was a good chance she wouldn't survive it. I saw her the day before and was passing on news: when I told her a relative was praying for her she just smiled and shook her head. Proof (at least to me), that you can face death courageously without God on your side.
Incidentally, she survived the operation, is undergoing chemotherapy and feels very well most of the time.
It is typical for the religious to cling to an old myth like this.
In reality, foxholes (and all other dangerous places) have just as many atheists as anywhere else. I know dozens of soldiers who are atheists and have been under fire from "Evil Muslims."
It is sad that "Sandy" misses the irony of this whole thing - if belief under pressure meant god was real, what about Islamic soldiers....?
[Reads site linked to] Those comments were... strange.
Yeah, there's all kinds of stupid in those comments there. Yikes.
If there are no atheists in foxholes then there are a lot of foxholes with a dead theist at the bottom who prayed their sorry asses off and got fuck-all for their troubles.
And where did I spend ten years of my life, at the fucking beach? Royal Regiment of Canada, Canadian Armed Forces Primary Reserve, Land Element, Infantry, 1969 to 1979.
Bitch.
I really like this comment from some guy identified as "An Atheist" at the linked site, because it reflects what I feel when I hear people complaining about The Golden Compass:
"(...)
As for the movie: I don't remember atheists raising a stink about the Chronicles of Narnia. It's quite hypocritical of Christians to use a film like Narnia to promote their view and then complain about another film that does the same thing for people of a different opinion.
Is freedom of speech only valid if it's your speech that's being protected?"
have you never heard the screams? the screams of pain and suffering, people dying and falling apart? the screams of "there is no god! there is no god!"? the friends of the dead, asking "what sort of god would do this to people"? I think you'll find that the exact opposite applies. war turns people into skeptics, not believers.
And funily enough, you've never carried out the experiment. You know, with so many conceptions of God, maybe they invoke the wrong one(see Cat Stevens)
I question if this isn't a Poe. "Evil Muslims" and "UNATHEISTS" just make me lol.
But, of course, "'There are no atheists in foxholes' isn't an argument against atheism, it's an argument against foxholes." (James Morrow)
Stupid Bitch: I'm an atheist and I did a tour of duty in Iraq. I don't ever recall "converting" when the rockets were bearing down on me.
I hope you come back to check on this thread because thank you, thank you, thank you for your service. I don't agree with the war, but I support whatever the troops actually there want 100%, as opposed to what the politicians here just bloviate about it.
Oh, and wishing a God existed to save you is not the same thing as actually believing in one (remember, you can't spell "believe" without "lie.")
Two quotes...
1. Any damn fool can quote a phrase.
2. The argument is not against atheists, its against fox holes.
And who is to say they pick Christianity? They could decide that voodoo is for them.
Put an athiest in a foxhole and there's a chance they might drop to their knees, seeking one last drop of something from a being that, for all we know, doesn't even show up to grant whatever solace is being asked for.
Or they may just Rambo their way out of the situation instead of dropping to their knees like their weak-willed bretheren would.
I have never served in the military, but I have friends and family members who have been in combat, and none of them would agree with Sandy. A just god wouldn't permit war.
As for atheists seeking attention, knock off the condescending crap already. What are fundies anyway but attention whores?
I just have to have a go at this: learn to spell! Your ignorance is so painfully showing by both the idiocy you write down and the idiocy you write it with! It's written ATHEIST, ATHEEEEEEEEIIIIIIISSSSSSSSTTTTT. First the E, then the I, it's not that hard
What about the fire from Evil Christians towards the Muslim foxhole? Does that turn atheist Arabs into Muslims?
Nobody receives much attention in my country for being atheist; it's devout Christians who get the attention over here. "You mean you actually believe in those ancient stories?"
There is no religion in a foxhole, I highly doubt that you would have time to say your prayers while having to react to people shooting at you.
I am not a soldier, but I can imagine being pretty pissed of, if some guy in a foxhole with me would start praying to a God to do something, while he should you know be doing something.
That phrase has been real popular since WW2,,,with Christians. Like most Cliches it is an unfounded assertion and was debunked within months of wars end.
Christian churchs were very alarmed by surviving soldiers returning with their faith shattered by the horrors of war. As we've seen by many veterans posting on this site war can certainly confirm most doubts of a loving God.
“I have heard it said and truly believe there is no such thing as an athiest.”
Speaking as an atheist, perhaps there are no athiests. Fine,w whatever.
“Put them in a foxhole or in the direct line of fire from Evil Muslims and watch how quickly they become UNATHIESTS.”
Yes, yes, a person’s fear reaction is their true outlook, just like when they’re on hallucinogens or half-asleep.
On the other hand, I have been an atheist on a submarine during a flooding casualty, watching the water rush in, and been damned sure we were going to die. But i never prayed. Or crossed my fingers. Just kept on with our immediate actions. So, even for a stupid opinion, you’re wrong.
Big surprise.
“This is for attention only and they do receive the attention otherwise such nonsense would never be put on a screen.”
Your book says that goats have stripes because their parents saw striped sticks during sex.
Being slow to accept such unrealistic bullshit is NOT the nonsense option….
Confused?
