I don't know what you're getting so fucking worked up about. Washington hasn't done shit about the Confederate flag. You can still possess it, you can still display it. It was only taken down from the South Carolina capitol building because of a decision made by the local legislature.
I'd imagine you wouldn't be very sympathetic towards a certain European using your reasoning. For example, let me take some of what you wrote and make a few changes.
"Most of us Southerners are not actually big fans of the Confederacy, or their history as slavers and racist fuckwits. You've got just enough small groups that are vocal enough to keep that perception alive.
The flag is...is a part of our history. We're not proud of it, but we've lived it."
Now, let's change that to:
"Most of us Germans are not actually big fans of the Nazis, or their history as slavers and racist fuckwits. You've got just enough small groups that are vocal enough to keep that perception alive.
The (Nazi) flag is...is a part of our history. We're not proud of it, but we've lived it."
Or this:
"Yes we realize what the flag stands for, yes we're not proud of the legacy it representm, but it's our fucking legacy. It should the decision of each southern state to give it up. Why? Because we've lived here, we've died here, and our blood, sweat, and traditions run through the blood of the land. The flag is our cross to bear, and it isn't right for some Washington politcian to waltz in and demand it be taken down just because you don't like it."
To this:
"Yes we realize what the (Nazi) flag stands for, yes we're not proud of the legacy it representm, but it's our fucking legacy. It should the decision of each German state to give it up. Why? Because we've lived here, we've died here, and our blood, sweat, and traditions run through the blood of the land. The (Nazi) flag is our cross to bear, and it isn't right for some Berlin politician to waltz in and demand it be taken down just because you don't like it."
Yeah, I bet most people wouldn't be in agreement if a German tried to make that case for the Nazi swastika. In fact, I'd bet that a statement like that would wind up either on here or on RSTDT.
It baffles me how even southerners who oppose the Confederacy and everything it stood for still have such a big, fat, pulsing, twitching boner for its flag.
