Caling Christians silly is not the same as calling someone who believes in fairy unicorns silly. Christianity and other ancient religions have a background to them, a real framework of sorts to be based upon. Unicorns, fairies and their half-breed childkin are based only on mythical stories passed down through the ages.

While as atheists, we can see the humour in this post, I wouldn't call it fundy. This quote is neither offensive, nor is it strictly false. Ancient and powerful religions such as Christianity have grown and adapted to take an importance in the life of people in ways that fairies never have.
Following your logic, should I be entitled to believe that Little Red Rinning Hood is going to bring Honey and bread to her granny?, am I entitled to believe that wolves and piglets speak and have their own villas in the forest?, or that if I lose a glass slipper in a party I will marry the most handsome and the richest guy in our place?. I think he deserves a "at least he's honest" award. He recognises that it is possible, on equal grounds, to believe in the Tooth Fairy, which is a lot.
"Unicorns, fairies and their half-breed childkin are based only on mythical stories passed down through the ages."
And here's some examples of mythical stories involving unicorns:
Numbers 23:22 - "God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn."
Deuteronomy 33:17 - "His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns"
Job 39:9 - "Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?"
Psalms 29:6 - "He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn."
Isaiah 34:7 - "And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls;"
And let's not even get started on the subject of dragons and giants!
Golly... I was thinking Controverse here might hang out under bridges waiting to pounce goats, but after reading the source... Um, no. He seems to be oblivious to how much different the views of other branches of christianity is, and how much they contradict each other. Hell, just typing in "unicorn" and "bible" gave different sites that list where the bible talks about unicorns (and saytrs too, it seems), so even though he wondered about something, and had the tools to research with, he never bothered to look anything up.
Polished Mirror award seconded.
"This quote is neither offensive, nor is it strictly false."
That's not the point. It needn't be offensive to be fundy. It just needs to demonstrate a level of just don't get it, and this one delivered with brutal irony, question-begging and no true scotsmans about "real frameworks" versus "mythical stories."
"Ancient and powerful religions such as Christianity have grown and adapted to take an importance in the life of people in ways that fairies never have."
So has television. So has Nascar. So what? It doesn't make the messages any better, clearer, or more relevant. Only the emotionally and mentally retarded actually need to believe something badly enough and quite frankly, majority or not, they don't count for everything. An intelligent and thoughtful person can pull more meaning out of a good novel than all religious texts combined.
For teaching morals, I'll take Aesop, the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, or even more modern soothsayers like John Steinbeck or Kurt Vonnegut. And not being an emotional cripple means that I am free to learn from their messages without needing some flimsy structure of belief or "framework," made up of nothing but generations of gullibility. Old, petrified bullshit is no more appealing than fresh bullshit, except as a teaching tool to help avoid bullshit altogether in the future. Putting your little collections of petrified bullshit on an altar, worshipping them without considering them first, and claiming that they hold real lessons for all time for all people-shit, I'd rather deal with leprechaun hunters and go to a fairy tea party in a circle of toadstools. Bullshit is harmless, until someone asks you to swallow it.
Role-playing games also have a background, loads and loads of background, actually. And their background is much more precise and coherent. Of course, they benefitted from having(usually) better editors than the Babble...
"Christianity and other ancient religions have a background to them,.."
Where did that background come from?
Oh thats right..."mythical stories passed down through the ages. "
LOL so Khameo DID make good on his promise to submit this one after all!
Not that it bothers me in the slightest, being a FSTDT patron for a fair while and having submitted quotes myself. But he did fail to answer the simple question I asked of him: why did he join CF in the first place if all he wanted to do was ridicule us? Seems rather immature to me.
I'm honestly surprised he made good on his promise though. I'll call this one a victim of bad wording, which tends to happen to me a lot no matter how much time and effort I put into crafting a sentence to bring its point across. Occasionally something like this will come through due to carelessness. >.<
Reading through the whole thread, it's essentially a game of tug-o-war between Khameo and the others, although I wish I was mature enough back then not to bother arguing with anyone who comes barging through the door seeking to have a go at me for my faith.
Okaaay guys, that's enough. I hadn't gotten to the part where it mentioned unicorns back then, so I have a viable excuse. :P
Not going to bother arguing with you people, since it will solve nothing. >.<
Holy shit on a stick, the quoted stopped by and didn't toss random insults at us? I may faint.
Then again, he did leave the Parthian shot of "Not going to bother arguing with you people, since it will solve nothing." You've got nothing to argue with and know it, so you jump on your high horse and ride off. I suppose it could have been worse.
Confused?
