If the Catholic Church would have weeded out Gay Priests there would not have been an Alter Boy scandal. There will always be a minority of people that can not control themselves and having Gay men in those type of situations, including Priests, Scoutmasters, Coaches and etc., is flirting with disaster. Just like a minority of straight men could not be trusted with young girls. How many men are Girl Scout leaders?

The Catholic Church would have prevented the altar boy molestations if they had priests that were not forced in celibacy! Homosexuality had little to no role in the abuse, in comparison to sexual repression.
The majority of people cannot control themselves if put into the same situation as a Catholic priest (in regards to remaining faithful to vows of celibacy, not having influence over young boys...). It is true that a minority of straight men should not be trusted with young girls. Yet, those men are either psychologically disturbed or, in a manner similar to the priests, sexually repressed.
And I believe that male Girl Scout leaders are not unknown...

I highly suggest reading the grand jury report on the whole scandal. As the jury points out, most of these men were serial molesters who had over 100 victims. The reason why most of them went after young boys is because that was all they had available. Many, though, had access to young girls. There are stories in the report of priests targeting preteen girls, one of whom was impregnated and taken in for an abortion. The report even mentions a priest who molested a girl when she was only 3 years old.

In any case, your leap of logic is ridiculous. Sexual orientation does not equal pedophilia or ephebophilia. The vast majority of the people in our country (the world, even), regardless of sexual orientation, are content to have consensual relations with people who are of legal age. There will always be those people, though, who are more than willing to abuse a position of trust and power, especially when they are deprived of the right to pursue a fundamental human desire.
This is really remarkably stupid. An organization that makes sexual repression, something to be admired, and they're surprised to have more than their share of sexual deviants? If they weeded out their gay priests, it would leave ONLY the child molesters and seriously disturbed wackos. It's actually interesting how the church uses sexual repression to fuel their believers - how else could they get anyone to care about their useless debates? Case study in manipulation.
Except attraction to adults and attraction to children is not correlated.
See, 40% of pedophiles are not attracted to adults AT ALL, male or female. And those that are attracted to adults as well as children, are not necessarily going to be attracted to adults of the same sex as the children they abuse.
There's no way of knowing based on the adults a person fucks, whether he or she is a danger to children.
What we CAN do is listen to children, and if a person in a position of trust abuses her (or him), we need to keep that person away from children in the future, and not recycle priests from one congregation to another, leaving trails of abuse.

They went after the underage boys because they have many feminine qualities about them. Denying themselves contact with women, they used the boys as their sexual outlet.
