*Sigh* Sorry for pointing out that you guys aren't the be all and end all at parenting, or that the people you hate might...just might...be better at it (purely on average.) Funny, too. you will go hunting for the most tenuous, biased examples to show how homosexuals are incompetent and incapable as parents, however, the moment a study shows that you might be wrong, it's obviously flawed, biased and must be discarded.

Once again, I will offer my plan for a solution (which would, unfortunately, never be accepted):

1) The government should stay out of "marriage." If it is in fact, a spiritual concept, then the government of a secular state has no business getting involved.

2) Because there are legal benefits to being married, I propose that we separate those benefits under a separate arrangement called "Domestic Partnership."

3) A domestic partnership would consist of two adults who enter into this contract for the sole purpose of gaining the legal benefits that currently are applied to married couples. The individuals can be gay, straight, sleeping together or even just roommates. Hell, they can be related, as the arrangement exists solely to obtain the legal benefits currently assigned to "marriage."

4) In this way, religious groups can still define marriage however they want, and approve or deny marrying couples by whichever criteria wish to devise, and couples who wish to have the legal benefits associated with being married can still claim them, without having to worry about a church being willing to marry them.

How do you get gender-specific advice if you're a boy, and your father left your mother while she was pregnant with you? Grandfathers, uncles, cousins, teachers, friends, neighbors...seriously, there are lots of kids with only a mom or a dad, how much worse do you think it could be to have TWO moms or TWO dads? I would think kids of two gay parents would actually do better, having two loving, supportive parental figures rather than a single parent with little support system.

@Orion : Marc's position on marriage doesn't conflict with "white weddings", or any other form of religious or non-religious marriage ceremony. It's just that the (legal, functional, tangible) advantages of marriage wouldn't be limited to married couples anymore. This way, everyone could have their own definition of marriage without it standing in the way of legal freedom and equality, since the notion of marriage wouldn't be used by any official institution anymore.

In other words, marriage would become a tradition associated with the main form of legal patnership, rather than being the main form of legal partnership and narrowing its advantages to romantiacally and sexually involved heterosexual couples.

you know, it's funny, but I was raised by my mother and another woman; they kept me clothed and fed and ensured I had the best that they could afford. My biological father was absent from my life from the time I was three until I was 16 yet strangely I have never been regarded as "feminised".

I have smoked, drunk, fought in Viking groups, been in a rifle club (UK) and done some basic martial arts. I've never been attracted to men though a couple of guys made have passes and accepted my "no, thanks" with equanimity. I have stopped one or two people beating on their partners and received a kicking after not calling the police in a similar situation (there were three of them and no witnesses).

I love women and have made love to a few, I have given my heart to some and live with my dearest love so far.

All of this has happened despite me being raised by two women, neither of whom had any men "callers" but then my mother was alway deeply in love with my father (they remarried when I was 17) whilst my grandmother was just born in the 19th century and always had pre- Great War values.

Then, by all means, stay in the backwater. We progressive nations have already "adopted" gender-neutral marriage laws, and some also have gender-neutral laws for adoptions. No-one gets preferential treatment in adoption, it's all about the best interest of the child.

Lesbians don't live in a male-free world, they have brothers, friends, colleagues, fathers, cousins who are male, who can give a male perspective on things, if needed.

Also, the irony of the original statement is this: It is very likely that "Freedom_Is_Not_Free" is a virulent anti-choicer. It is also possible that they buy into the bullcrap that birth control is bad and adequate sex education is worse, the same mentality that leads to communities having a higher teen birth rate. It is also EXTREMELY likely that "Freedom_Is_Not_Free" has never adopted or fostered a child and in fact probably has about five or six biological sprogs at home.
