Texans are allowing bilingual practices everywhere. THey’re stupid on this.

What is the plan?

All Mexican-Americans will be bilingual?

Absolutely not. That’s just illogical, not to mention that the social pressure is that all Americans owe it to the Mexicans and Mexican Americans to convert their culture.

Latinos voted Dem for pres 74%.

They’ll turn Texas blue so fast it’s going to curl people’s hair.

There’ll be no where to go after that.

Heard an ad this morning for a roofing co whil listening to Rush: “Mexicans get 50% off”.

FF One year. Gonna be a different place. Perry is not on top of this, unless he wants it, which I wouldn’t put past these dopey dopey GOPers.

And why not? Speak Spanish at home, English outside of home. Or simply do whatever you want. Given the demographics of it, it would be time anyway to do like New Mexico and adopt Spanish as the second official language of the United States. It's become a bilingual country anyways.

Oh please, America has no culture on its own. And that's America's great advantage over nation states, that it can integrate any other culture within the rag rug that it calls its culture. Your cuisine is (apart from pop-foods) a wide mixture of everything, your city names are based in three different languages (even if you butcher two of them) and up until mass media arrived there was a multitude of languages in use (German, English, Dutch, Yiddish, Chinese, French, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Finnish). You people celebrate Thanksgiving, Halloween and the Oktoberfest. Your country is nothing but a cultural mix of all it's immigrants. And Mexico isn't all that different.

@spukikitty: maybe it's my proximity with the spanish border, but i don't find spanish all that sexy. compared to mexican spanish, catalan, castillian and aranese sound gruff and fast (lots of guttural fry), oh and very loud. i'll make an exception to gallician, but they don't bark, they sing, loudly. it's a beautiful language when you read it or hear spanish poetry in a "classical" accent, but it's not comparable to mexican spanish when spoken daily.

for a fun culture shock, hear toulousan french and picard french. that's hilarious. i'm from the south, and there's much witty banter between northerners and southerners based on accents and pronunciation. namely, that southerners sing and have three types of "o" sounds. in truth, it's very similar to a southerner drawl and twang.

italian is very melodious, however. too much, like they like listening to themselves speak... theeeeen you hear some allighieri, and it all becomes better.

See? The non-racist thing to say in this situation would be, "all Americans owe it to the Mexicans to allow them to cherish their cultural diversity and keep their heritage alive even as they adjust to their new home."

What he said, in effect, is that the Mexicans should give up that filthy, incomprehensible tongue of theirs and abandon their barbaric, backwards, inferior little culture, before it infects the rest of American culture. That's a pretty racist sentiment.

He's not off base in terms of Texas trending increasingly blue. I've seen political analysts predict it becoming a blue state within the next 20 years thanks mostly to the Hispanic population.

As for the language thing, get over it. It's been shown that Hispanics in the United States end up speaking only or mostly English by the 3rd generation in most cases anyway.

Also I never felt pressured to convert to "Mexican Culture" whatever the hell you think that is or why it would clash with the already melting-pot culture of the United States. Nor do I understand why the GOP would want Texas to be a blue state since it pretty much insures the Democrats would never lose another presidential election ever again.

And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is what is at the root of the racist right-wing fear and hubbub of immigration and Hispanics (and all minorities) in general. The GOP knows they've pushed nearly all of their (already limited) minority support away trying to chase after the Archie Bunker demographic. Now it's dawning on them that the 21st century will be a much browner America and one with people more open to progressive ideas.

I love it! I'm loving watching Republicans squirm and cry as it dawns on them that their days are numbered. XD Yes, GOP, you're about 10 years away from sharing the fate of the dinosaurs (or the Whigs). The death grip of your gnarled, wrinkled hands over America's heart, mind and soul is loosening fast. Maybe we'll eventually be shed of your racism, your unyielding corporatism and your soulless anti-social program Social Darwinian sociopathy. :)

If you really think that foreign languages or cultures are being "imposed" on Americans, then you're just as racist as the OP. It's usually racists who see immigrants celebrating their own culture as "imposing" it upon the rest of the country. It's like they're saying, "HEY! Yore in 'murrica now. You don't listen to that furrin music or wave no furrin flags. Gawldam furriners is takin' over!"
