I've only heard of "unity in what is necessary, liberty in what is disputed and in all things charity" being the motto of the Church of England. The Roman Catholic Church was more "do as we say or you're damned for eternity" Accepting other people's right to decide their own religious beliefs only happened in the mid 19th century I think. You're also comvientky forgetting the Great Schism of 1054 and the various anti popes that ran around in the early Middle Ages.
The Reformation escalated from simply wanting the church to change things to a schism. It had been brewing for awhile due to corruption within the Catholic Church like indulgences and priests becoming such for political/economical power instead of worrying for their flocks' spiritual well being.
Ok, but reading the Scriptures means the reader is going to interpret it. On what basis are we to believe what interpretation .
Using reason to determine God's" attributes/existence dates back to Aristotle, Descartes tried to prove he was a good Catholic by using it as well in his Meditations .
Throw out reason? Why?
How dies universal equality = universal murder? It wasn't like there wasn't murderers when the Catholic Church had power. Hell, the Bible records the first murder just one generation after God created humans.
