I do feel compelled to add to this. When I was living in Austria and parts of southern Germany, I had the opportunity to see how many Benedictine and related monestaries were (at the time) alive and vibrant, took their monastic life seriously, and were actually doing good for their local communities in any number of ways. In that context, the accounts of Napoleon having forcibly closed monestaries and confiscated their possessions and properties appeared very negative. It wasn’t until I was living more in the north of Germany that I learned that, at the time of Napoleon, most monasteries there were mere money machines for nobility who possessed archaic rights to lands and positions in and of the monasteries. The abbots were usually only that in name, lived totally secular lives, and just shoveled the income from the monasteries into their pockets. This is what Napoleon did away with and I see that positively. What we know of as Germany today was basically a complicated quilt of land rights granted by the Emperor in trickle down, pay up mafia fashion. Napoleon is to be applauded for doing away with most of that and transfering the lands and rights to (usually) local secular communities.

If the former nobles want to piss and moan about it, they should be happy they weren’t in Russia where most of them were taken out in the snow and shot.

Uhh, the Enlightenment is praiseworthy in my view too. And many of Napoleon’s secular communal reforms helped shape modern day Europe. Sure, his horrible imperialistic war mongering was terrible and inexcusable, along with all his power grabbing and other things, but his disbanding of the mafia style grip the Holy Roman Empire and the nobility had on most of Europe was a welcome side attraction and basically the only thing that remained of his influence.

I’m not sure about that last part . Germans say “Nettoeinkommen” for “income after taxes and other fees”/”take home income”, so he/she may be talking about that. And “free” might be “tax free”. It’s non-sensical anyway, because netto wages are tax free by definition. Maybe he/she means “work free”, i.e. “I take it without working for it”.

Immigrants getting tons of benefits for free that exceed what a normal worker earns is a popular myth among German “rednecks”.

ETA, or what Bastethotep wrote while I was writing mine. Mine ist probably too complicated.

This actually reminds me of something I experienced about 20 years ago. A studied physicist I knew whose mind had become totally clouded by anthroposophy was trying to market an object based on, according to him, anthroposophical principles, which was supposed to save the world from pollutants. He claimed that by sending water through a maze of curved pipes he could “change the properties” of the water. The water would be “supercharged.” It would bind pollutants and could then be used to make concrete. The concrete would be the strongest ever and the pollutants would be locked up for eternity.
