Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) — A young Pakistani woman was still breathing when police say her mother and brother set her on fire for eloping against their wishes, CNN affiliate Geo News reported.

Zeenat Rafique secretly dated her husband for years before marrying.

An autopsy released Thursday said Zeenat Rafique, 18, had traces of smoke in her respiratory tract, indicating she was alive when she was set ablaze.

Rafique had also been strangled, the autopsy said, according to Geo News.

The young woman was laid to rest Thursday by her tearful husband, 19-year-old Hassan Khan.

"When we saw her body, she had strangulation marks on her neck," Rafique's mother-in-law Shahida Bib said.

Rafique's family had refused to accept her body.

Vile Monsters. How can anyone do that to anyone, let alone their own flesh and blood?
I can barely contain my tears. May Hassan, and any other friend who shall miss her, find the strength to carry on, and may fortune be merciful for the rest of their life! May poor Zeenat Rafique, whose life was far too short, life on in good memory. And may those aboominable kinslayers spend the rest of their lives in misery and guilt. I know it is small solace, because a woman who should have lived many long decades, who was cruelly taken from her husband, who was betrayed by her family in the vilest way possible, will still be dead. But, since I know that this deepest wish of mine will never come true, this is all I can offer.

South Asia is and always has been a shithole. Yes, I know it's "racist" and will probably trigger folks, but it's completely true. I've read old South Asian religious texts, historical, anthropological and sociological accounts, and yeah. South Asia as a whole is and has always been a misogynistic shithole. Literally a part of the world where livestock are treated better than women.

Honestly, quite frankly, anyone who says all cultures are equal is plainly wrong. Either they (people who say that) don't give a fuck about women or they just don't know shit and need to do their research. There is no possible way someone could be a non-misogynist and not come to the conclusion that the West and Western culture are just plain superior.

And yes, I know someone'll be like "b-b-but da west be sexist too its no durned diffart wen u tink abot t u ray cyst :( *drools*" But, while sexism (even institutionalized sexism) does indeed exist in the West, and is indeed a problem that needs to be fixed, it is not even remotely on the same level. The Kama Sutra literally has a chapter about how to rape women and use the shame from that (or rather the fear of being killed/ostracized by their communities) to force them to marry you, so that, as your wife, they'll have to serve your every whim and you can rape them all day as much as you want(and yet Liberals who've never read it pretend to love this book, I guess because it has sex and naughty pictures). Compare the historical status of bhikkunis or Buddhist nuns (who were explicitly subordinated in every way to bhikkus (monks) - even the oldest, most experienced bhikkuni to the youngest, most novice bhikku - even to the point of originally being required to bow to bhikkus when they saw them) to that of Christian nuns (who weren't). Even at our absolute worst, we were never as bad as really any part of South Asia. Hell even in comparatively non-sexist Sri Lanka, rural village elders have been known to punish women with gang-rape for acts of impropriety.

If Hell exists, it is in South Asia.

Now to watch someone pretend I'm wrong. Maybe they'll mention some famous South Asian woman who they heard of once or who they kinda sorta vaguely know of, as if that proves me wrong. Or maybe they'll just go with the old "Well I know a South Asian family and they're very nice QED".

Yeah, the mother and/or mother-in-law often are involved. I would even say most of the time, at least one of them is directly involved.

Wait, what? As far as I know, this was done by Muslims in Pakistan, not Hindus. And as far as I know, while violence against women is terribly common in India, the government at least does something about it (and does not condone it in any way, shape, or form), unlike Pakistan, who have recently drafted a law that says that violence is fine as long as you "lightly beat" your wife.

There are some terrible things in Indian culture, but at least India is trying to escape the trappings. Yes, not all cultures are equal, but you can't judge a country by some ancient texts that it may or may not fully follow (of course, there are still some Indians who say that citizens should do exactly that, but then again, so does the WBC with Christians).

And why are you blaming this on "culture" in the first place? Don't get me wrong, South Asian culture has some terrible things (cough, cough, caste system) , but no one is justifying their atrocities against women using Hinduism. Could it be because THEY ARE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES WITH SOME PEOPLE DISCRIMINATING IN ORDER TO HAVE POWER?
