Trotsky was... well, I'll give you that. But he wasn't devout, and in fact, he was only a moderate communist. He was a Menshevik, by the dubz. The Mensheviks were more moderate than the Bolsheviks.

Trotsky had ceased being a Menshevik by 1917 and became rather far from moderate in his dealing with the sailors of Kronstadt and any ideas trade unions had about protecting their workers. By then he was a totalitarian in word and deed.
Most of the Old Bolsheviks were, in fact, Russian. Jews were over-represented in their ranks, but so were other minorities. Given the proportion of Jews in senior positions, there is just as good a case for saying that the Bolsheviks were run by Poles, Balts, Armenians or Georgians.

Indeed. The minorities I mentioned all faced racial discrimination and, with the exception of the Georgians, religious discrimination as well. Baltic Germans and Volga Germans were also represented before Stalin and Hitler combined to destroy them, and in 1917-18 the communists almost succeeded in taking Finland.
You can see this in other movements, like the appeal of Ba'athism to religious minorities in Syria (Alawites and Christians) and Iraq (Sunnis and Christians). However, as with the urban/progressive-rural/conservative pattern, while useful as a rule of thumb, it doesn't always work out that way.
