He wrote a tranny character in his comic and say he's 'genderqueer' but likely more in old school going against the norm sense rather than identity sense. Now Wikipedia and news outlet just bestowed they/them pronouns and troon status for him so he can be a good poster boy for current day politics just like how Marsha P. Johnson got posthumously transed even if he said explicitly that he was just a crossdressing gay man in non-drag self.

The difference is that Grant Morrison is alive, so he made a comment that you can call him whatever, but he never cared about pronoun policing culture we have today.

Since his stance on pronoun and gender is 'whatever', the media took that as a confirmation that he's trans now and you must use the correct pronouns.
