@Malingspann:
As best I can tell, at least some of it definitely did. It's a really tragic and awful story that's been in the news a lot lately in Brazil. I can't tell if either of the two really claimed that the child's castration was an attempt at a sex change, but one of them definitely gave a very different reason when she claimed that it was an act of revenge against his father and compared her anger to the wrath of the Old Testament God. This story has unfortunately been used to slander the LGBT+ community, who are already virulently hated, and a lot of bullshit has been spread about it (including claims that the perpetrators were released from jail on the recommendation of a human rights committee that doesn't actually exist). It wouldn't surprise me at all if the claim was made up entirely, although they could have claimed that later in an attempt to get their charges for torture thrown out.
Why they did it, though, is ultimately not anywhere near as important as what this version of the story is leaving out. Namely, the two women were *batshit insane*. If the "holy wrath of the Old Testament God came over me and made me remove my eight year old son's penis" bit didn't make it obvious, the two were obsessed with some kind of idiosyncratic religion where one of them (Rosana) was the only pastor. She believed that she was a prophet receiving divine revelations that frequently told her how to "care for" (read: horribly abuse) both of her children, including ultimately a revelation from God that she should stab her son 50 times, dismember his body, and put the bits into suitcases.
This really has nothing to do with their being a gay couple or with their child identifying as female (even if one of them really believed that, which I doubt, the two were so detached from reality that their belief that he was transgender wouldn't mean that he actually was) but given the current atmosphere in Brazil, it's been incredibly politicized. In reality, it's just an awful crime committed against a child by two people who were too delusional to even convince anyone to join their cult.
