Members of the tribal Christian community were allegedly harassed, assaulted, and prevented from holding prayers in Kapena village in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district, after Hindu villagers demanded that a church be shifted from its current location, claiming that its presence was “obstructing their religious activities.”

According to community members, a mob used loudspeakers to issue threats, warning that the church would be demolished and that around 30 tribal Christian families would be expelled from the village if they continued their religious practices.

Notably, a sacred grove and a prayer hall-cum-church—Blessing Youth Mission Church—had existed in close proximity for nearly 18 years without reported conflict.

For the past two weeks, however, tension has prevailed in the village. Tribals form the majority among the roughly 250 households in Kapena. Most residents belong to the Gond, Bhatra, and Santa communities and depend on farming for their livelihood. Over the years, some tribal families have converted to Christianity.

Late on Sunday evening, two tribal Christian youths—John Santa, 20, and Jolandar Santa, 17—were allegedly summoned by villagers and beaten. The youths later filed a complaint at the Umerkote Police Station on January 26, naming seven villagers. Christians said three of the named accused were among those who led the mob attack.

Police subsequently visited the village, removed the lock from the church gate, and deployed personnel to guard the building, said Gourab Kauri, secretary of the Nabarangpur Christian Minority Council, as quoted by UCA News.

“We received a distress call on January 26 from members of the Christian community in Kapena village, who said they felt threatened after some villagers asked them to shift their church to a distant location, alleging it was obstructing religious activities,” The Hindu quoted Ramakant Sai, Inspector-in-Charge of Umerkote Police Station, as saying.

Following the complaint, senior district officials along with police personnel reached Kapena village. Residents from nearby villages also joined the locals in opposing the church.

As attacks against the Christian community have increased across the country, a pastor from Odisha’s Dhenkanal district was brutally assaulted, forced to chant Jai Sree Ram, and made to eat cow dung by members of the Bajrang Dal, his wife alleged.

The incident, which took place on January 4 (Sunday), came to light recently. Pastor Bipin Bihari Naik, along with his wife and a few others, was attending a prayer meeting at a house in Parjang village when a mob of around 40 people gathered outside.

Speaking to Maktoob, Vandana, Naik’s wife, who was present at the prayer meeting, said the mob asked Naik to come outside the house. When he told them he would do so after the prayer was completed, the mob forcibly entered the house.

“They started beating everyone inside the house. Besides us, there were seven families who were praying with us. My children and I managed to run out of the house and rushed through a narrow alley towards the nearest police station,” Vandana said.

Bipin, who was the main target, was not spared. According to Naik, he was dragged outside and beaten on every part of his body. He was continuously slapped and beaten with sticks by the crowd. Red sindoor was smeared all over his face, and a garland of slippers was placed around his neck.

Along with Bajrang Dal members and some villagers, Naik was dragged and paraded throughout the village. This continued for nearly two hours.

Meanwhile, Vandana was at the police station, pleading with officers to rescue her husband. “It was only after nearly two hours that the police reached the village,” she said.

Vandana added that despite her repeated requests, the police initially misled her, claiming there was no one in the village. However, when she insisted on accompanying them to the location, what they witnessed was horrific.

“My husband was tied to a Hanuman temple in the village. Both his hands were tied behind a rod. He was forced to consume cow dung and was bleeding badly. People were slapping him and forcing him to chant Jai Sree Ram,” she said.

However, the FIR accessed by Maktoob states that Naik was forced to drink drain water, while his wife repeated the claim that he was forced to consume cow dung.

Satyanishta Arya #fundie #wingnut maktoobmedia.com

A complaint has been registered at Bengaluru’s Koramangala police station after a video showing a man aggressively interrupting what appears to be a Christian prayer programme went viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage and calls for police action.

In the video, the man, identified as Satyanishta Arya, along with a few associates, is seen confronting a Christian priest and members of the congregation. Wearing a tilak, he repeatedly interrupts the programme and questions the priest, asking, “What is Jesus Christ’s book?” When the priest responds, “The Gospel of John and the Bible,” the man launches into a tirade, mocking Christian beliefs and religious texts.

He is heard making derogatory remarks about the Bible, questioning its origins, and asserting the supremacy of Hindu scriptures such as the Vedas, Manusmriti, and the Upanishads. “We will never follow any Christian’s Bible… Jai Shri Ram!” he shouts in the video. He also declares, “Jesus Christ is not ours. Who is ours? Lord Rama, am I right?”

The video further shows him making inflammatory comparisons to the Babri Masjid, suggesting forced religious change, and using abusive language against Muslim cleric Maulana Mehmood Madani.

“Maulana Mehmood Madani is an anti-national… That bastard should be arrested. Can you say that?” he asks.

He also mocks the Christian belief in the virgin birth of Jesus, repeatedly questioning the priest about Mother Mary’s pregnancy and ridiculing the explanation of conception through the Holy Spirit. At several points, he is seen intimidating those present, including telling others not to speak and abusing a woman who questions him.

Mahendra Hembram, one of the convicts in the brutal murder of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two young sons, was released from Odisha’s Keonjhar jail on Wednesday after spending 25 years in jail.

Officials said the release was granted on the grounds of “good behaviour,” based on the recommendations of the Odisha State Sentence Review Board and in accordance with the state’s premature release policy.

Now 51, Hembram was convicted for his role in the horrifying attack that took place on the night of January 21, 1999, when a Hindu right-wing mob torched a jeep in which Staines and his sons — Timothy (6) and Philip (10) — were sleeping in Manoharpur village, Keonjhar district.

The three were burned alive, a crime that drew global outrage and became a grim symbol of Hindutva violence in India.

At the time of the crime, Hembram was 25 years old and part of the group that carried out the deadly assault.

Upon his release, he was garlanded by supporters, who raised Hindutva slogans of “Jai Shri Ram.”

Local Hindutva leader and social media influencer Aadesh Soni called on Hindus to attack, rape, and kill Christians across the villages of Bishrampur, Ganeshpur, and Jhanakpur in Chhattisgarh in March, accusing them of “brainwashing children” through conversion efforts

Aadesh Soni declared on social media that the plan was to “kill all Christians, violate the honor of their daughters and daughters-in-law, commit obscene acts against them, forcibly enter Christian homes, and spare no one but corrupt them all”

Soni called on his followers to mobilise at least 50,000 people for an attack on March 1, 2025, explicitly stating that Christian families would be targeted, their leaders executed, and any trace of their faith erased from the region

In a widely circulated video, he calls for the public humiliation, stripping, raping, and killing of Christian men, women, and children

“I have got the support of the administration, this is enough for me,” he claimed

In his Facebook post, he also referred to Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati’s speech at Prayagraj, where it was declared that Hindus must “kill all Christians, and none should be spared”

Avimukteshwaranand called for 1,000 Hindus to rise and “slay those who slay our mother cow. Do not ask for the death penalty for cow slayers—kill them and ask for the death penalty for yourselves. Do not wait for the law to act”
