Scathing report says Mounties raped, abused aboriginal girls

I can probably give a little insight into why more police officers grow to dislike natives.

I grew up in a town which had a reserve located just outside of it. I'll start with my experience with them first. If I was getting bullied by someone, it was going to be a native kid. If a kid was being disruptive in class, failing to do assigned homework, or fail tests, likely native.

A half native, half white girl was gang beaten by three or four native girls in a school bathroom. She did end up in the hospital. There weren't charges pressed.

One of my friends while walking through a downtown park was mugged, can you guess by whom he was mugged?

Their parents don't give two flying fucks about their performance in school, how they treat others, or pretty much anything.

My dad, he's RCMP. He dealt with natives regularly, frequent domestic violence calls to the reserve. Typically they would be drunk. Of course he dealt with a variety of calls but the ones to the reserve were easily the most stressful ones.

What other group of people can call essentially an all out war on police forces, firing on them indiscriminately, and not get obliterated in return?

I have never met a group so entitled and lazy as reserve natives in my life. Hell, I regularly get complaints about charging them taxes on fucking pizza. They get $10, 000 dollars in government money for doing nothing, over something that happened 150 years ago http://www.firstperspective.ca/news/2462-first-nations-dole-out-10000-federal-settlement-cheques and then they complain about $5 taxes

Of course I'm a decent human being and give everyone multiple chances to prove they aren't a dick head. I don't let my previous experiences effect how I treat new people, but not all people do. After dealing with shit like this themselves, and watching others deal with similar shit, I can understand why they'd have a hard time being pleasant all the time.

Also, don't think for a second I'm trying to excuse RCMP actions for what may, or may not have occurred with this girl. That is undeniably fucked up if true.

Their entire civilization and way of life was completely destroyed. I think you can cut them a fucking break.

It's still on RCMP to not view everyone of a group as horrible people beforehand.

$l0,000 doesn't sound like a lot tbh. There are several tribes in Canada and they each probably have quite a few people.

Exactly the same rhetoric I’ve heard from those racist against the Aborigines, here, but this is obviously in Canada. The same victim blaming, anywhere I guess. NO EXCUSES!

I lived in Saskatoon and was working as a security guard at a large hospital during the same time period this happened. I used to work the graveyard shift and since few restaurants were open and our cafeteria went all night, the city police would often come in and eat there. I ended up getting to know many of them and joined them for meals etc.
In my personal experience, I have never met such a universally racist and abusive set of people in any other job since. They not only didn't care about natives, they fucking hated them. I know this is city police versus mounties but I don't suspect they are too different in their attitudes.

Several commenters responded with their own experiences of previously apparently wholesome and unoffensive friends who went to work in areas with a large number of First Nations people, after which they seemed to have changed into vile racists.

The OP, floppypick, then gave his own interpretation of why that might be so, based largely on his own alleged experiences growing up with ‘natives’.

What makes the situation here ‘interesting’… for lack of a better word… is that floppypick isn’t just some ignorant, asshole wingnut. I’ll explain a bit.

Somebody brought the residential school issue in their response to him. To his credit, floppypick at least simply acknowledged that and didn’t try to justify or downplay that abuse:

It's important to understand you're only describing 2/3s of the picture here. You're talking about how natives behave (1/3) in a manner that fulfills the stereotype (2/3) that lead to these actions. The problem is you're ignoring the most important part, which is why these things are happening! These problems that you have described are all manifestations and repercussions from policies that we, as Canadians, and our ancestors have enacted. That is the hidden part in any discussion about FNs and ~~arguably~~ the most important part.

I definitely should have gotten to that. It's not a flaw in who they are, they're fundamentally no different from any other group of people.
It's how Canada treats them, though laws, regulation and special treatment that has created the mess that is currently reserves. I would like nothing more for them than for success in life.

It's a wholly different situation thought, historically, and present.
Blacks aren't given guaranteed financial security. Free education, free land, or tax exemption.
I know my post wasn't 'politically correct' but that's the life I've personally lived, and that is my collection of anecdotes. I could however find some real statistical information on how they are represented in our prisons, as well as a host of other things like alcoholism.
Now is this because as a 'race' they are in any way lesser? Fuck no. It's largely a societal problem. My frustration stems from how from my perspective growing up, they do little to help themselves, stop living the stereotypes, or do anything to get out of the mess they're in.

Still racist in a way, perhaps, though more of a cultural bigotry rather than racial essentialism.

Btw. I looked at the first 4 or so pages of floppypick’s Reddit comments in order to get an idea of how this man’s mind works, what his actual views are, and whether his story from the OP is likely to be authentic or not.
My conclusion about his views? They’re… kind of complicated, or at least somewhat atypical and heterodox. I can give a summary in another post if anyone would like.

Sad really. Bad apples do tend to spoil the whole bunch. At least the flopster’s bigoted jerkassery has a misguided but semi-understandable-reasoning.

Even then, though, that doesn’t mean those gals deserved rape! Nothing excuses that behavior!

Likewise, swiping cigars from a convenience store doesn’t warrant getting shot to death! Selling cigarettes illegally on the street doesn’t warrant getting chokehold-to-death! Whatever Rodney King was doing, it didn’t deserve a BRUTAL beat-down with batons by MULTIPLE OFFICERS!

One must always take the high road! One must de-escalate! One must use the barest minimum of force! One must strive to befriend and work with the citizens (no matter how ‘ghetto’, ‘trailer trash’ or ‘rez’ they may seem)! One must consider sociological factors! That’s good police work!
