Warren Jeffs #fundie deseretnews.com

HILDALE, Washington County — As the year comes to an end and the followers of Warren Jeffs await the apocalypse he has predicted, they're living under a challenging edict: they're forbidden to have sex until Jeffs is sprung from a Texas prison.

"He has predicted that the walls in the prison where he's at will fall and crumble," said Joni Holm, who has many relatives in the polygamous FLDS faith.

According to Holm, Fundamentalist LDS Church members also face their faith's most severe punishment, excommunication, if they conceive a child.

It's one of the strangest edicts in a season full of them. Jeffs has issued a stream of revelations, prophecies and orders to his congregation in the border community of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz.

The recent edicts from Jeffs' prison cell seem to be having two contradictory effects. Many are leaving the FLDS faith in disgust. Those who stay are reported to be increasingly devoted to a man who is serving a lifetime sentence for raping underage girls.

According to numerous critics and outside observers, the imprisoned FLDS leader has sometimes acted through his brother Lyle and other times has spoken directly to his congregation over the phone from prison. He recently banned many of the things his followers enjoy: bicycles, ATVs, trampolines, even children's toys. But the sex edict reaches into the bedrooms of all his devoted followers.

According to Holm, Jeffs declared all existing marriages to be void.

"Right now they have all been told that they are not to live as husband and wife," Holm said. "They can live in the same house, but they are not to have sexual relationships until Warren comes out and 'reseals' them."

Using the term "pride" to describe a parade by homosexuals is an oxymoron. Can there be pride in the high rate of alcoholism, drug abuse and suicide among homosexuals? Can there be pride in the spread of AIDS?

Same-sex marriage is a danger to humanity, the family, children and is against the law of God.

It won't be long until we are not allowed to say "Christmas" in public. Brace yourselves! Lately I have been practicing saying, "Merry Mas everyone!" so it won't shock me too badly.

Sounds festive, doesn't it?

Before long we'll be putting up the Mas tree and singing Mas carols. (Of course all the Christmas songs we know and love will soon have to be converted... "I'm dreaming of a white Mas")

The good news is that as we continue to push God out of our lives, both publicly and privately, He will never leave us "but His arm is stretched out still".

Merry CHRISTmas everyone!

Satan,

Oops, I mean Santa

"At the time, only adult white male landowners were eligible to vote."

That's the way it should be now. Soon illegal immigrants will be voting to elect our president... Eventually, the whole world will get a vote. Some of the world's influence is being felt as we speak. Muslims and terrorists, for example, are encouraging voters to choose Osama.

First of all, polygamy is not a "nontraditional" marriage. It has been practiced since the days of Abraham and is still considered religiously acceptable by various Jewish and Muslim sects. Even though it is not socially acceptable in the United States today, it is still a union between a man and a woman.

Secondly, just because polygamy played a big role in the history of the LDS Church doesn't mean it is the focal point of the church's success. Faith in the Lord is the only focal point, period. And lastly, I can't understand how anyone can be so discouraged over something so trivial as the church's position on homosexuality. Whatever happened to the concept of "When the Lord speaks, the debate ends"?

Frank Salisbury (Readers' Forum, May 1) says that intelligent design is not science. Is there any implication that what is taught in many schools about creation is science? Science is privileged to teach many theories, which, of course, are not proven science. Darwinism is an unproven theory and is really only a story about what might have happened and is considered such by many qualified scientists. Astronomer Robert Jastrow says, "The Bible has been vindicated by the findings of modern science." We have got to stop letting the secular world destroy the only hope we have: God.

Don Larsen, a district chairman, has submitted a resolution equating illegal immigration to "Satan's plan to destroy the U.S. by stealth invasion" for debate at Saturday's Utah County Republican Party Convention.

Referring to a plan by the devil for a "New World Order ... as predicted in the Scriptures," the resolution calls for the Utah County Republican Party to support "closing the national borders to illegal immigration to prevent the destruction of the U.S. by stealth invasion."
