Filippo Biondi and Corrado Malanga's peer-reviewed paper on the Great Pyramid of Giza has been formally retracted by Remote Sensing, almost four years after the journal reviewed, revised, accepted and published it.

It didn't explain what those flaws or errors were though.

The retracted paper didn't itself prove the existence of a vast underground city beneath Giza. It examined the Great Pyramid and its immediate subsurface environment.

However, it supplied the published scientific foundation for the radar method used in the later Giza investigation. Removing it from the accepted literature weakens the academic standing of everything subsequently built upon that method.

Science shouldn't depend upon whether we trust Biondi, the journal, Egyptologists or the people attempting to debunk him.

It should depend upon evidence that can be inspected, challenged and reproduced.

A journal cannot spend four years presenting a paper as legitimate peer-reviewed research, retract it after the findings become internationally controversial, offer only a few vague sentences in explanation and expect nobody to question the process.

Biondi may ultimately be wrong. The alleged structures beneath Giza may be processing artefacts, statistical errors or something else entirely.

But if Remote Sensing has established that, it should publish the evidence.

Until it does, this retraction does not resemble the open scientific examination the public deserves. It looks like a conclusion delivered behind closed doors.
