I suspect that the reason Steven R. objects to “works-based theology” is that it would require him to actually DO something productive to achieve his salvation, rather than just memorize a few Bible verses. In your Bible, Matthew, Mark and Luke all tell the same story: “When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Apparently your Christ didn’t think there was “the sin nature that exists even in children.”

Jesus’ ministry was inclusive, yours is exclusive. Fred Rogers was a lot more Christlike than you, what with his treating children and adults with respect. He also accomplished more from a Christian standpoint than you can ever hope to do.

I always suspected that David’s Heaven would be a lonely place, with less than a dozen residents. Dave, you forgot to include in your list of those in Hell everyone who died before Jesus started teaching (they couldn’t follow Jesus), everyone who doesn’t speak English (they can’t follow the KJV), everyone who died before missionaries showed up (oops, they were Catholic, so even those who thought they were saved were doomed). For that matter, everyone including Paul who died before Martin Luther nailed up his theses is in Hell, since they were Catholic.

David’s Heaven will be a dull place; the only activities will be praising God and sitting around talking about how everyone else is in Hell. I’ve been to gatherings where everyone agrees about everything, and it got boring very quickly.

Bullshit. In fact, that’s one of the primary things taught about the Pilgrims. Granted, it’s usually taught as “how brave and heroic the Pilgrims were” and ignores the other Christians the Pilgrims persecuted, as well as the fact that they were totally unprepared to be colonists and almost died as a result, but the fact that they were Christians fleeing persecution is front and center of their story.

The Bible contradicts itself repeatedly. Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 have elements of Creation in different orders. The Gospels do not agree on who or how many were at the tomb on Easter morning, the critical event in Christianity.

The Bible has also been proven wrong repeatedly. It claims pi=3, bats are birds, insects have 4 legs, rabbits chew cud and the sun revolves around the flat earth. It reports that Jesus said he would return within the lifetime of those witnessing his ministry; either he lied, or there are some extremely long-lived people walking among us.

I would agree that televangelists are crooks, but many other ministers are as well, since they don’t really produce any useful product, but your whining sound more like jealousy that they’re raking in more than you do. By your own research, there are no proper New Testament churches on Guam, so by your own lights, everyone on Guam is doomed to Hell (except you, of course). As a biblical scholar, you know that most of the New Testament was written 2-300 years after Jesus’ death, and the KJV is a translation of the original documents. We no longer speak the Middle English used in the KJV, and the original texts were written in another part of the world, in a culture very different from today, so explain why we should use them as a guide to our lives.

You know, Dave, I get a lot of unwanted advertising emails too. Takes me about a half second to delete each without bothering to open it, so it maybe takes two minutes a day to deal with them. A minor annoyance, yes, but less than most of the commercials I have to watch on television or listen to on the radio. Certainly less of an annoyance than street preachers screaming “you’re going to hell” at everyone who passes by. I read a book that said something about motes and beams in one’s eye; maybe you’re familiar with it?

But that already happens, in courses with “Mythology” in the title. The one I had in high school, 50 years ago, covered the creation stories of the Greeks, Romans, Norse, Babylonians, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, First Nations, Aztec, Inca and the one in the Bible. Compared and contrasted them. There was no point in covering the Biblical creation in science classes, because there’s no more evidence that it’s more accurate than any of those other ones.
