So prisoners can be locked away from the general public, paid a pentence for what work they do, basically have no privacy, can't vote in elections, are allowed to be raped by other inmates with the public approving and then have their crime hovering over their heads for the rest of their lives, making it hard to get decent work and readjust to normal society but keeping their kids away from them directly because of the crime itself is too far.
