Far as I can see, societies get destroyed and new societies move in and take their stuff. Usually the ones that destroyed the old one.

Even in the case of China, often the rebuilder was actually an outsider, or it was only most of the kingdoms within that collapsed, not all, and they were taken over by the survivors. Never have they really had a civilization collapse that was picked up by the survivors of the collapse, but rather by those whose culture did not collapse under the weight of widespread chaos.
