Epidemiologists are experts on viruses, they’re not experts on… everything else not medically related, like the economy and other civilization-wide implications.
Take for example stay-at-home orders. They can reduce the R0 below 1, but as far as the impact on the society goes, lockdowns produce far bigger problems than the virus. The longer you lock down the more unsustainable it gets. Not a realistic solution and most governments have figured that out by now.
It isn’t so much that the medical professionals are “contradicting” the career conman who doesn’t think before he speaks. It’s that the profoundly stupid and unhinged psychopath you’re propping up has no fucking clue what he’s doing and simply doesn’t care enough about reality to know himself whether the shit coming out of his mouth is true all that matters is that he thinks he can reap a benefit by saying it. He would rather order anyone that works for him to actively attempt to change reality to match his words which he constantly contradicts and refuses to stand by, actively punish anyone that can’t alter or hide reality and viciously persecutes anyone that states the facts, and ultimately let people die rather than look like the fool he can’t stop being.

The task of a civil servant, in his sphere of competence, is to firstly serve the public; in this case, the task of a scientific expert isn’t to show deference to the error of the head of state but to state his honest interpretation of the facts. For exemple, in another sector, a lawyer would state his honest and informed opinion on a legal question, not to parrot pseudo-legal opinion aired by his client.

Of course the lawyer’s job is also to state that honest and informed legal opinion in such a way as to most favor his client, but still is not to spout obvious falsehoods about the law.
More importantly though, the various experts recruited by the Executive Branch do not work for the President, nor for the individual filling that office at any time. Instead, they work for the public of the United States of America, managed by the Office of the President of the United States. They are all our employees, something that Trump and all his supporters always want to conveniently forget, until it’s a Democrat in office.
