Very few of the rioters and looters even care about Mr. Floyd. Not even when the trouble started, and not now. They were/are too high on the mob mentality of looting, raising hell and hating the police...the very same police they will call next time they're in trouble.

You do not have the vaguest sliver of an idea of what the black community has gone through, and continues to go through to this day. The riots are happening because an anger that has existed over grave injustice for decades has finally boiled over, and no wonder. I’m surprised the black community tolerated so much for so long, and it’s literally my job to know why people bottle up abuse rather than express it. The tolerance for being alienated, treated unfairly as criminals, scapegoated, and outright murdered has been superhuman, and finally we’re seeing a human response.

Of course we are - black people are people, Sunny.

If this was about looting and taking the chance to commit crimes we’d be seeing people of all colours, genders, and ages doing it. You wouldn’t be trying to imply anything about POC, would you Sunny? Because that would reflect horribly on you.

We care. The continued police brutality, aimed towards peaceful protesters, is what's keeping the protests going. We got the four cops responsible arrested and it sounds like things are starting to tip towards demilitarizing the police and address racism within the police force.

Good. As tragic and undeserving as Floyd’s death was, I really hope it can be a catalyst for actual change in the US. Down with the sheer corruption, power-abuse, and privelige of the WASPS. Down with the StormTrumpers and their Republican f*ckbuddies.

Bullshit. Most people were protesting peacefully. They are damned tired of police and other good old boys getting away with murder. What the hell makes you think they don't care? I won't be holding my breath for an answer.

I can agree as far as actual looters are concerned. Anyone looting, they were there to loot, they don’t care about George Floyd at all beyond the opportunity his death provided. But if they’re even 1% of those involved in or connected with the protests I’ll be highly surprised. Looters will always be a minority of the people involved in any kind of unrest, taking advantage of a chance to get free stuff to sell later, but most of the people you see out there are merely angry at the way they and their friends are treated on a regular basis, and are sick of it.

Another thing to consider is George Floyd being black is only a very small part of that anger. It feeds into it certainly, especially the fear these officers would get away with this without even a warning because George Floyd is black. But the bigger concern for many people, if not the clear majority, was the use of an absolutely barred hold on a man who had already been brought under control, leading to that man’s death, and the callousness of the cops who ignored the injury, made no attempt to try to save Mister Floyd’s life, and prevented anyone else from interfering with the man’s death. People like SunnyJohansen will complain that this is done to white people every day, without ever presenting an example, and then use this to brush off the brutality and make it about race, while complaining it’s all about race for black people. Almost as if these very same people want only to protect the status quo with the police, whatever it may be. Like maybe … they think they’re protected.

Or maybe you’re just projecting, because you love the police when they murder and oppress minorities, but not when they enforce social distancing or pull you over for speeding and drunk driving.

Minorities (esp black people) have been experiencing police brutality for decades(but it was largely swept under the rug until more cases were caught on tape).

It's just that all those decades of brutality have finally come to a head. People can only take so much abuse before snapping.

People are rioting because an unarmed human being was murdered on tape like a damn dog by someone who was tasked with protecting and serving the community. They are rioting because they are sick of a system which allows cops to literally get away with murder.

It’s funny how the protests where the police showed up dressed like police and acted like police simply observing the protest to make sure it remained as calm as it started as opposed to dressed like an army and acting like the villains of post-apocalyptic fiction itching for and staging excuses to get their brutality on tend not to be the ones with looters. And it’s funnier still how protesters tend to be the ones stopping the looters and turning them over to police when the police aren’t kettling the crowd to make an excuse to disperse them with force and firing off ordinance like their commanding officers told them if there was anything left in the ammo box by quitting time they wouldn’t be getting dessert.

Exactly! These protests are not anti-police but anti-BAD-police.

Society should have police who aren’t Star Wars Mook wannabes. Society should have nice, heroic men & women who uphold the law, serve the community, catch the bad guys and be generally awesome. Cops need to be working WITH the community and earning their trust. This in turn makes solving cases easier because the citizens would be willing to help.

We want (regardless of ethnicity, gender, etc.) “Malloy & Reed”, not “Callahan & Phasma” (Okay; Callahan was technically a hero but he was a fashy jerk with a few screws lose)!

I think American society has to take some of the blame for what the police have become. There is the very strong indication that Americans confuse what’s exciting on TV for what’s good actual police work, that there has to be a confrontational component or they’re not doing their jobs. A recurring theme is disdain for those who do things “by the books” seeing them as impotent obstructionists who drag their feet while lauding “mavericks” who care not for any rules or restrictions and ignoring that they don’t uphold rights in practice and realistically would leave chaos in their wake acting without strong evidence, forethought, or even a reasonable basis besides “gut feelings” and that’s somehow laudable.

But the more immediate problem is the very reason people call the police, especially where race is involved. There is an epidemic of people who call the police not out of any actual fear or in response to something illegal happening but simply to visit misery and potentially injury on others out of annoyance and thinking of them as a trump card that can be deployed to bypass the hassle of reasoning with others. The police in that practice are not peacekeepers but a surrogate fist employed by a coward who immediately ducks out after using them as a suckerpunch to avoid culpability and washes their hands of the aftermath. Such pettiness exemplifies the core of the problem: Police are seen by Americans as a force of retribution, preferably immediate and violent as a “warning” to others and entertainment to those who fancy themselves just and honest citizens. They tolerate brutality telling themselves that it could only happen to someone who “deserves it” in some way, failing to see the hypocrisy and failing to see that coming to expect and desire in some form gratification by vicarious delivery of punishment spills into the consciousness of the police themselves.

And just as the general public expects police work to be like it is on TV, police feel that if they aren’t establishing dominance and throwing someone in cuffs for the “trouble” of being called out there then they aren’t doing their job or look “weak” in the eyes of the public. Many join the force less out of a sense of service but as a desire to establish control of the world according to the shallowest application of their own values or simply enact some infantile revenge against a changing world that doesn’t favour them.

That said the current talk of defunding the police sounds like madness. Something has to be done - something drastic after so much time ignoring the problem allowing it to fester and swell to this almost apocalyptic scale - but going as far as removing police presence entirely would just give rise to vigilantes who still equate administering violent retribution for sleights as “justice” rather than keeping situations from getting out of hand in the first place. The mindset about good policing hasn’t actually changed even though people are finally seeing the senseless victimization that results from it. The only thing that would change is who specifically is held accountable, and if it’s the public left to their own devices keeping them accountable will be nigh impossible. It’s retribution over the preservation of peace and justice. It’s learning nothing.
