In general, I'm not pro-sanctions. I tend to believe in war, not sanctions.

I tend to believe in war
But only when you get to stay home and watch tidbits of it on the evening news, right? How about we put you right out in front of the first line? Hmm, sanctions suddenly don’t sound that bad, huh?
Really? War, what is it good for? This forever young soldier knew about that, far better than you.
Let the boy try along this bayonet-blade
How cold steel is, and keen with hunger of blood;
Blue with all malice, like a madman’s flash;
And thinly drawn with famishing for flesh.
Lend him to stroke these blind, blunt bullet-heads
Which long to muzzle in the hearts of lads.
Or give him cartridges of fine zinc teeth,
Sharp with the sharpness of grief and death.
For this teeth seem for laughing round an apple,
There lurk no claws behind his fingers supple;
And God will grow no talons at his heels,
Nor antlers through the thickness of his curls.
- Wilfred Owen
In other words if you think if the opportunity to inflict violence against those you've convinced yourself cannot defend against you exists you need no options or even a particular goal to push towards, only an excuse. Vicariously, of course, as nobody actually acquainted with life-and-death fighting has any delusions of going untouched.
Such militarism is ultimately destructing to everyone, since making violence more an element of international relations make compromises more difficult to attain, and the resulting wars cause destructions of lives and material wealth.
This is the reason why we have the United Nations.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
