Her point โchildren and civilians dying = badโ
His point โthat clashes with reality, you canโt care about every civilian or child dying everywhere all at once, itโs impossible. Instead focus on your immediate community, instead of trying to care about every child and citizen from every country in the world all at once โ
Her response โI careโ
Sheโs on ground level while heโs talking three levels above her. Sheโs virtue signaling, heโs in reality.
Be emotional all you want, throw a tantrum, heโs right here

Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.
-John Donne, 1624
In the original technical sense, โvirtue signalingโ meant making a show of what you believe in (or purport to believe in, in the case of people who are insincere) in small, often subtle ways. The non-technical usage of the term is currently all over the place, with no clear definition, beyond something which is done by โother people that I donโt likeโ.
Without further context (which I donโt feel like looking at) appears that the OP is saying โdonโt look at the forest, only the trees. Looking at the forest is a sign of immaturity and disconnect from what really mattersโ. Iโd argue thatโs very wrong - people should be looking at both large-scale issues and small-scale subsets of them, and people who concentrate on one or the other shouldnโt disrespect the other side of it, as both are important. In that sense, one could flip the metaphor and say the OP is on the ground level and sheโs looking from higher up.
But based on the wording and tone I suspect that the OP is one of those people who donโt understand empathy beyond the tribe (whatever they perceive as their โtribeโ), and even then, only on a rather superficial level.
I think youโre confusing โcaringโ with โthinking about.โ No I cannot list every single injustice in the world in my head simultaneously. I CAN, however, hold that each injustice is an injustice, i can care that world authorities are either ignoring or supporting the injusticies, or praising them. I can care that our leaders who pose as moral authorities are not using their influence to limit vast cases of unnecessary death, starvation, disequality, and brain-dead boobies choosing not to vaccinate while demanding absolutely no reprecussions, and those pardoning felons because of how they voted.
You want an excuse NOT to think on things that you donโt find concerning. Fine. Just be an asshole, donโt pretend that itโs more enlightened to be a check-valve.
Confused?
