I have a masters degree in linguistics. I doubt Davey will be able to understand this, but here we go!

Davey - groups migrated to vastly different points of the globe. Most of that time we didn’t have written language. The languages changed and became more distinct as groups moved. Groups that moved together and stayed in similar places but not next to each other developed languages similar enough to be considered related. Languages have evolved (I know that word scares you, Davey) based in part on their contact or lack thereof with other languages. Historical linguistics is my specialty so this stuff is quite fascinating to me. Too bad you probably won’t be able to understand my extremely basic explanation.
