Early socialists, I believe, had to promote the idea that housework was in fact labor. Childcare for example is 24/7 with no days off and falls solely to the mother. Same for cooking and cleaning which benefits everyone. Imagine what you would have to pay if your wife/mother/sister didn't clean and cook.
In contrast, doing a regular job got you out of the house and around other adults. You also had some money to help with the household or to put in savings or whatever. If your husband died or abandoned the family or was an alcoholic, you need money to support yourself and your family.
