Actually, the idea that medieval Europeans were covered in dirt and had no standards of hygiene is a caricatures and a myth. The idea that Jewish people fared better in the black plague because of better hygiene standards seems to be a myth: the muslim middle east which has just as stringent hygiene standards had just as many plague outbreaks.
