I've been told repeatedly that police don't hassle me because I have "privilege" -- implying that it's unearned.
It was earned. By every person who looks like me and *didn't* commit crimes. Thanks to you, I almost never "fit the description" and am not considered a threat.

Except, Paid Enya, HOW many times when someone black is targeted by cops because they "fit the description", that’s ‘fit’ as in ‘is the same skin color’ even though they look nothing like the description in any other way?
So, you’re saying that fitting a demographic means one HAS earned racist police abuses.
So, yes, your privilege is undeserved. Just straight up bigotry.

that still means it is unearned, because it wasn’t earned by you the person enjoying the gains. Because, get what, people are individuals. If we are talking about obligatory groups (i.e. groups whose membership is not a choice, like race, gender identity, trans/cis status, sexual orientation, disability etc) no one should be treated better or worse just based on membership to one of these groups.
Guilt by association, and even worse, by skin color, a minor genetic variation that resulted in white people, because our ancestors were black. Outright racism and justification of systemic racism. This reminds me that I can notice how some store clerks can behave differently when I shop with black girlfriends. It's unnecessary to mention that those women are not thieves.

Minor quibble: Privileges can be earned. It depends on what kind of privilege you’re talking about; the main issue is whether certain social privileges can ever be earned fairly . And regardless, if it’s not based on anything you personally did (in this case, being born a race is not a personal action) then it’s definitely unearned, and by definition, unfair. It also gets messy when it’s mostly or entirely earned by your own actions but your unearned privileges greatly help you get to the point of being able to perform those actions.

What about the people who *don’t* look like you but also *didn’t* commit crimes either?
BTW, excuse me for making the obvious joke, lol….Diane should shut her Yap.
Confused?
