very few startups actually make it to the profitable phase. The fat cats see to that.

I know someone who was trying to start a boarding kennel in the late 90s/early 2000s. She loved dogs and was great with them. However, she was black and middle class, which were absolutely considered strikes against her in the area where we lived. She would find a location, do all she needed to start there, and then the complaints would start rolling in. Because it was dogs, there were constant noise complaints - even though she wasn’t in a residential district. There were also constant threats and people would call the cops on her because of course in the lily white town we were in, people wanted to keep her out and many didn’t want to see her business succeed. And so it would come to a point where either she’d have to move her business because of harassment or because the cops demanded she do so. After about 3 years of this she was completely broke, had lost her home, and her teenage daughter was suicidal. All because wealthier people were purposely trying to keep her from succeeding for no reason other than racism and classism. It was awful.
